The New York Jets were given one of the tallest tasks to start the year of any NFL team's schedule ahead of the 2026 schedule.
Sure, they start the season against the Tennessee Titans, a team that finished last in the AFC South last season, but they then go on to face three straight opponents from the NFC North in the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears.
All three of those teams had winning records last season, and the Packers and Bears were both playoff teams. Thankfully for New York, they seem to be avoiding one of the best players in the league in Week 2 when they face the Packers. Micah Parsons will start the season on the PUP list.
The Jets may have gotten another stroke of luck in Week 4 when they face the Bears, as they may be missing one of their big-ticket free agent additions on the backend.
New York Jets may dodge Coby Bryant in Week 4 matchup vs. Chicago Bears
At Monday's Bears practice, defensive back Coby Bryant was carted off the field with a knee injury. ESPN's Adam Schefter later reported that the former Seattle Seahawk is expected to miss at minimum two months.
"Bears safety Coby Bryant is expected to be sidelined 8-10 weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture that he suffered at today’s practice, per sources. No surgery is expected to be needed."
With the injury prognosis being almost two months, it almost assuredly knocks him out for the Jets matchup in Chicago on October 4.
It should be a sigh of relief for New York. Bryant was a key piece of Seattle's championship defense last year and joined Chicago on a lucrative three-year, $40 million contract in free agency.
After losing Nahshon Wright in free agency as well, it's safe to say the Bears will be a bit undermanned in the secondary to start the year.
Geno Smith and the Jets' passing game should be able to take advantage of the opportunity presented to them in Chicago.
With Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and Kenyon Sadiq in tow, New York has no excuse but to look to move the ball through the air when the day comes.
Of course, there's also the chance Bryant can beat his recovery window, and he does happen to suit up for Week 4.
Until then, though, the Jets should see a prime opportunity to pick up their first win against the Bears since 2022.
