Jets make flurry of roster moves amid rash of injuries at wide receiver

It's no secret that the New York Jets are currently facing some struggles at the wide receiver position. They have three members of the initial 53-man roster on injured reserve in veteran Tim Patrick, rookie Omar Cooper Jr., and Arian Smith.

It's why they've had to play some roster gymnastics ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions, per the New York Post's Brian Costello, signing Jamaal Pritchett to the active roster from the practice squad and deciding to elevate veteran Sterling Shepard for Sunday's game.

Pritchett, a former undrafted free agent, will be active for his first-ever NFL game. The former Tuskegee and South Alabama product has been with the Jets since 2025.

Shepard, on the other hand, will make his first appearance for a team not named the New York Giants or Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He'll be a solid stabilizing force for the wide receivers that the Jets are currently lacking due to injuries.

New York Jets wide receivers are in a tough spot

The Jets only carried four wide receivers into their Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, and it showed. The Packers stacked the box and dared New York to throw, which Geno Smith was able to do to varying degrees of success.

Heading into Week 3, it seems like the Jets are trying to prevent themselves from being put into a box in a box offensively and giving Smith and Frank Reich more options to work with in the passing game.

Adonai Mitchell, the Jets' clear-cut WR2, is questionable for Sunday's game with a finger injury. He was limited in practice on Thursday and Friday, and his status against the Lions is unclear. A picture from Friday's practice hit social media, and it looks not-so-great.

If Mitchell can't go on Sunday, it will likely be the Garrett Wilson show featuring Isaiah Williams, Shepard, Malik McClain, and Pritchett. That feels like a receiving core the Jets would've trotted out in 2025 before trading for Mitchell and John Metchie.

Jamaal Pritchett could be a return option for New York Jets

With kick returner Kene Nwangwu still not ready to make his 2026 debut thanks to a back injury, and Isaiah Williams muffing two punts against the Packers in Week 2, Pritchett could serve as an intriguing return option for the Jets against the Lions.

During the preseason, Pritchett returned one kick for 32 yards and three punts for 46 yards, including a long of 19. If Williams isn't able to handle another punt, he may end up being replaced mid-game.
