Jets' Kenyon Sadiq facing injury setback that may force extended training camp absence

It seems like the New York Jets are going to be without one of their key offseason additions for the remainder of the summer, as Kenyon Sadiq is reportedly facing a setback in his recovery from offseason surgery.

After participating in all of rookie minicamp, Sadiq would miss OTAs while recovering from minor surgery to fix a sports hernia. After participating in the first practice of training camp, it seems Sadiq's offseason has come to an end.

Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters the 16th overall pick suffered "a little setback," per The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, and that he'll "be out for a little bit."

Glenn also added that he's "not worried" about the young tight end, via Rosenblatt, and he's "very confident" that Sadiq will be ready and suited up when the Jets take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the regular season.

Obviously, this is bad news for the Jets. Sadiq was figured to be a key piece of the Jets' offense in 2026, and not that he still can't be, but he's set to miss valuable practice time and preseason action that could've helped him prepare better for the regular season.

Instead, Sadiq will have to do what he did during OTAs, and that's watch from the sidelines, soaking up as much information as he can with mental reps.

He obviously won't be physically participating, but that doesn't mean he can't still continue to prepare for his eventual NFL debut.

For now, the Jets can look to rely on the other tight ends on the roster to fill the gaps left behind by Sadiq. There should be plenty of opportunities to go around now with Sadiq out for at least the next month.

Mason Taylor receives ample opportunity in New York Jets training camp

While one door closes, another opens for Jets tight end Mason Taylor, the Jets' 2025 second-round draft pick who led the team in receptions last year.

Taylor now steps in as the de facto TE1 in New York's offense, instead of splitting reps with Sadiq throughout practices. Even Jeremy Ruckert should see more time with the first team.

Who knows, maybe Jelani Woods, the Jets' fourth tight end, will be able to carve out his role throughout camp.

We'll see what the Jets tight ends do with their new opportunities, while Sadiq remains sidelined recovering from the setback stemming from his hernia surgery.
