Jets' Justin Tucker interest is exactly what this team does not need

The New York Jets' search for a kicker has taken them to strange places, as they have dug so far into the well for players who are better than either Blake Grupe or Jason Sanders that they are considering former Baltimore Ravens All-Pro Justin Tucker despite his nefarious history.

The Jets, who added Grupe to the 53-man roster and retained Sanders on the practice squad, worked out Tucker as part of a trio of kickers that includes former Chargers standout Michael Badgley and Rams starter Joshua Karty. While none of these are high-end options at this point in their careers, Tucker would be the worst addition of the three.

The cloud of negativity around Tucker is so thick that it serves the Jets no benefit to even consider bringing him to town, especially when the sharp downturn in his play means there is no justification for their interest in him.

Looking just at the stats, Tucker is clearly the best kicker on the market. With five All-Pro teams and a record of accuracy that could put him in Canton, no one is doubting Tucker's performances despite his struggles in his final season with the Ravens. However, signing Tucker would send a very bad message.

Tucker was recently suspended 10 games in the 2025 season after an NFL investigation into allegations that he showed inappropriate sexual behavior aimed at multiple massage therapists between the 2012 and 2016 seasons. Tucker apologized to "anyone I have worked with" who may have felt uncomfortable around him, but stopped short of admitting guilt.

It shouldn't need to be said, but bringing in someone accused of doing the disgusting things that Tucker has been accused of would fly right in the face of the Jets promoting a morally sound locker room. Why would a team that has hoped and prayed for a quiet offseason throw this grenade in the middle of their locker room for no reason?

On top of the distraction and betrayal of morals that Tucker would bring with him, he was beaten out by Cade York, of all kickers, when he tried out with the Saints. The Colts hosted him for a tryout, and they chose to sign Grupe instead. He's clearly lost a step, eroding any justification to bring him in.
