Jets work out another leg amid wide-open kicking competition

It's no secret that the New York Jets are struggling to find a suitable replacement for Nick Folk at kicker. The preseason yielded little confidence in either Cade York or Jason Sanders, the latter of whom was named the Week 1 starter before absolutely bombing in the finale.

Ahead of 53-man roster cuts, the Jets claimed former Indianapolis Colts kicker Blake Grupe off waivers. In a corresponding move, New York released Sanders, but later added him back to the practice squad to maintain some level of competition.

It seems even with the addition of Grupe, the Jets aren't quite satisfied with what they've got quite yet. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that the team was working out former Los Angeles Rams kicker Joshua Karty.

Karty kicked for the Rams the last two seasons, but was released midway through the 2025 campaign. Ironically enough, he was replaced by former Jets kicker Harrison Mevis, who competed with Folk during training camp last summer in New York.

A sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Karty has 25 games of kicking experience under his belt in Los Angeles. From 2024 to 2025, he attempted 49 field goals and made 39 of them, with his career-long coming from 58 yards deep.

If the Jets decide they like what they see from Karty during his workout on Tuesday, they'll likely have to decide which of their other two kickers they'll want to part ways with, and Sanders seems the obvious candidate.

The former Miami Dolphins All-Pro was inconsistent throughout the preseason. His first two games were solid, but he completely fell apart in the finale. Against the New York Giants, Sanders missed an extra point attempt and couldn't kick the ball far enough on a 54-yard attempt later in the game.

With Grupe and even Karty, you know they'll have the leg strength to make it from that distance; the question is really just about consistency.

Grupe struggled throughout Indianapolis' preseason himself converting only 2-of-4 field goal attempts. It's how he lost the competition to Spencer Shrader.

But you can at least say the former Colts kicker has a better recent resume. Throughout five appearances in 2025, Grupe didn't miss a single kick, and even drilled a 60-yard field goal in Seattle against the Seahawks late in the year.

We'll see if the Jets end up making any roster tweaks today centered around Karty.
