Jets fans used Aaron Glenn to reiterate their pent-up aggression towards Robert Saleh

Aaron Glenn spent much of his second offseason as the New York Jets’ coach trying to win a tortured and angry fan base over to his side.

As Sunday afternoon’s victory over the Titans proved, Glenn always had one thing working in his favor: He wasn’t Robert Saleh.

Those in attendance at Nissan Stadium in Tennessee made sure to remind Saleh of that fact, chanting Glenn’s name throughout the fourth quarter of the Jets’ 23-10 victory. Trust us when we say that the final score looks much closer than the game actually was, as the Jets’ defense held Tennessee under 200 yards of total offense.

So much for the Titans, who closed at 1.5-point favorites, dealing the Jets yet another Week 1 loss. Instead, as was often the case during his three-plus seasons in New York, Saleh walked off the field hearing it from Jets fans.

Saleh spent the lead-up to Week 1 alternating between taking the high road about his October 2024 dismissal and claiming that he made several correct decisions as the Jets’ coach. Sure, he never wore the wrong pair of pants or left the stove on before leaving for the stadium, so he’s technically correct.

Remember how the national media spent all offseason building Saleh up as a future star coach who simply had a string of misfortune in New York? Cam Ward averaged 4.4 yards per completion, and lead running back Tony Pollard had only seven carries. Tennessee guaranteed $14 million to blocking tight end Daniel Bellinger, and he rewarded the Titans’ investment with a 7-yard catch on his lone target.

If that sounds eerily familiar, then you’re not alone. Sunday was the ultimate “leopards never change their spots” moment for Jets fans, at least as it pertains to Saleh. First impressions are lasting, and he showed that he learned absolutely nothing from his first stint as a head coach. The Titans, just as the Jets so frequently did when Saleh was their head coach, looked lethargic and lost. 

Geno Smith went 19-of-24 for 215 yards and took no sacks. Although the Jets averaged 3.9 yards per carry, that number was impacted by Smith’s picking up seven yards on six carries; Breece Hall (102) and Braelon Allen (40) combined for 142 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries. But yes, Saleh’s Titans defense was bound to thrive because of how successful he was in San Francisco.

Ex-Jets defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, who had also played for Saleh with the 49ers, ripped his former team last week for how it handled the coach’s October 2024 firing. If Sunday was any sign of what’s to come, then both men might want to start thinking about where they’ll be in 2027.
