Jets fans can’t stop laughing at the Dolphins’ Week 1 implosion

Miami had it much worse in Week 1.

Week 1 didn’t end in a win for the New York Jets, thanks in part to Xavier Gipson’s fumble that set up a quick Steelers touchdown, but they still went toe-to-toe with friend-turned-foe Aaron Rodgers’ passing attack and held their own both through the air and on the ground.

However, the Jets played competitive football, something that couldn’t be said for other AFC teams in Week 1, such as the Miami Dolphins, who were blown out 33-8 by the Colts, with all eight points coming late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa managed just 114 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble, while the Dolphins mustered only 78 rushing yards.

It was a rough outing for a team once hailed for having one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses. In reality, that unit has delivered just one playoff appearance between two disappointing seasons, leaving head coach Mike McDaniel on the hot seat entering 2025, as The Athletic's Ted Nguyen said earlier this year.

While New York came up short in Week 1, at least they looked competitive. The same couldn’t be said for Miami, whose ugly blowout loss gave Jets fans plenty to say online.

Jets fans pulled no punches on Miami's blowout loss

By the time the Jets-Steelers game ended, so had Miami’s loss to the Colts, giving Jets fans a chance to shift focus from their own disappointment to their divisional rival’s collapse.

So, losing Week 1 was softened not only by Miami’s collapse but also by New England’s loss. Even Buffalo faced issues on Sunday night, though against a Ravens team widely expected to contend for the Super Bowl.

Despite the final score, most agreed the Jets put up a strong fight. Justin Fields impressed in his debut, combining for 266 total yards and three touchdowns without a turnover and taking just one sack.

Meanwhile, Breece Hall, playing on an expiring contract, rushed for 107 yards to start what's potentially his final year in green and white. Garrett Wilson added seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown, though he was crunched on the Jets’ final play, which could have extended Aaron Glenn’s team into field goal range.

Keeping those good vibes will be tough with Josh Allen and the Bills coming to town in Week 2. A Week 1 loss can be shrugged off, especially in a competitive, high-scoring game, but in a short season, the danger of falling into a hole comes quickly.

Jets fans can take some positives from this loss while Miami flounders, but if the honeymoon period fades next week, they’ll be searching for answers too.
