Jets fans can't help but laugh after watching the Patriots' NFL Kickoff meltdown

The NFL is back this week, and it kicked off Wednesday night with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks defending their title against the team they defeated in the big game this past February, the New England Patriots. Man, was it a sweet night for New York Jets fans.

Sure, a Patriots defeat doesn't do much for the Jets right now other than give them bragging rights over the next few days that they're technically ahead of them in the AFC East standings, but considering where things have stood between the two division rivals over the last few years, Gang Green fans will take what they can get.

Things started off rough when beloved ex-Jets quarterback Sam Darnold exited the game after just five snaps with a hip injury. Darnold may not don the Green & White anymore, but his behavior and attitude in the years that have followed have endeared him to fans. His exit was a tough blow for Jets faithful.

But it wasn't Darnold who sent the Patriots packing tonight under center for Seattle, but veteran backup Drew Lock, who was able to do just enough to help orchestrate a 13-point comeback to beat New England 13-10, thanks in large part to several boneheaded Drake Maye interceptions.

New York Jets fans surely enjoyed the New England Patriots' opening night loss

All diehard NFL fans tune in for the league's season opener, and Jets fans are surely no different. On Wednesday night, it was a textbook hate-watch, in the hopes of seeing the Patriots fall flat on their faces in their attempt to avenge their Super Bowl loss.

At first, it looked like the Patriots were on track to get their get-back against Seattle. When Darnold first exited the game, the Seahawks offense went stagnant, and ill-timed penalties nearly took them out of the game.

But the real hero of the night for Jets fans was none other than the Patriots quarterback himself. Maye, who didn't look like the MVP candidate he was in 2025, threw three interceptions, with the last one being the nail in the coffin.

With New England in range for a game-tying field goal, Maye went for the game-winner with less than 30 seconds on the clock, throwing a ball up for Mack Hollins in the end zone. It was plucked out of the air by Seahawks defensive back Josh Jobe, and the game was over.

With the way the Patriots played tonight, particularly in the second half, there's no reason the Jets shouldn't have faith that they can at least split their two matchups against New England in 2026. They may not have the defense that the Seahawks boast, but their offense can certainly match the pace that Lock was able to set for Seattle on Wednesday night.

At least for the next few days, the Jets can gloat that they're ahead of their hated rival in the divisional standings. But Sunday's season opener against the Tennessee Titans will really dictate who gets the last laugh on opening weekend.
