The New York Jets finally picked up a win on Sunday afternoon as they pulled off a thrilling 39-38 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. It is the first win of the season and the first of the Aaron Glenn era.
It was also a very emotional day for everyone in the Jets community. Just over an hour before kickoff, the team announced that franchise legend Nick Mangold had passed away on Saturday night due to complications from chronic kidney disease. He was 41 years old.
Mangold's on-field performance in his eleven seasons in the NFL, all spent with the Jets, speaks for itself. Mangold made the Pro Bowl seven times and was a first-team All-Pro twice. He was also a cornerstone piece during the Jets' back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances under Rex Ryan in 2009 and 2010.
It wasn't just Mangold's on-field play that stood out; it was also the type of person he was. His kind and humorous personality made him a fan favorite and someone whom people loved being around. Even after his playing days were over, Mangold remained a fixture in the Jets community.
After a heartbreaking start to the day, the Jets gave their fans something to cheer about in a game that saw the team come back in a big way.
Aaron Glenn and the Jets pull off comeback win in Week 8
After starting the season 0-7, on the brink of going 0-8 before their Week 9 bye week, it was clear that Aaron Glenn and the Jets desperately needed this win. While it was far from perfect, New York did something on Sunday afternoon that hasn't been done in a long time.
Despite a strong performance from the offense through the first three quarters, the Jets still found themselves down 31-16 entering the fourth quarter. The Jets' 23-point fourth quarter led them to the second-largest fourth-quarter comeback in franchise history as they came back from down 15 to win.
Jets fans would have to go back to the 'Monday Night Miracle' in 2000 to find the largest fourth-quarter comeback when the team erased a 23-point deficit to beat the Miami Dolphins in dramatic fashion.
A win like this has not come very often in recent years for the Jets, especially when looking at the way this season has played out. In past games, when this Jets team would fall behind early or make one mistake, they have crumbled at adversity and let the game get away, which they finally avoided today.
After a crazy week, which began with Woody Johnson publicly bashing Justin Fields, the embattled quarterback went out and delivered a big-time performance. Fields completed 65.6% of his passes for 244 yards and a touchdown, including a few big throws on third down.
It was also an impressive showing for Glenn, who clicked all the right buttons during the game and had this team ready to play despite a chaotic week of outside noise. The way this team didn't quit and the locker room reaction afterward show Glenn still has these players believing in his vision.
It's only one win, but Glenn and this coaching staff need wins and continued improvement the rest of the way if they really want to build something sustainable moving forward.
A day that started with heartbreaking news ended with a triumph win. RIP Nick Mangold.
