Training camp has not gotten off to a good start for the New York Jets, as starting quarterback Justin Fields limped off the practice field on Thursday morning and was then carted off the field. While head coach Aaron Glenn reported that his quarterback suffered a toe injury and wasn't aware of what the severity of the injury was.
While the vibes are hopefully leaning toward Fields being okay and ready to go for a Week 1 showdown with the Steelers, what if that's not the case? What if Fields has to miss an extended period of time?
The rest of the Jets' quarterback room consists of journeyman Tyrod Taylor and the unproven Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook. Taylor obviously has starting experience in the NFL, with the Jets being the seventh team he's taken regular-season snaps for. Martinez joined the Jets last summer as an undrafted free agent after playing college ball at Nebraska and Kansas State. Cook was a UDFA this year out of Missouri.
So yeah, the depth doesn't exactly give fans confidence, especially if Fields has to miss more than a handful of games. This could lead the team to reunite with former fan favorite Mike White, who spent several years in the Jets organization.
Reuniting with Mike White could make a lot of sense for Jets
White departed from the Jets in 2023 but stayed in the division, as he joined the Miami Dolphins for that season. He continued his run through all of the AFC East teams by heading to Buffalo for the 2024 season where he remains as of this writing and is competing with Mitch Trubisky to be Josh Allen's backup this year.
It's unique to pull off trades in your own division but adding White could be an option for the Jets here if Fields has to miss an extended period of time. White has proven that he can play well for the Jets and he's beloved by the fan base. If this ended up happening, fans probably wouldn't be too upset about it.
That being said, hopefully Fields is okay and can indeed take the field when the Jets take on the Steelers in September. The team signed him hoping that he could help them win games this year and it's hard for him to do that if he's not healthy. Fields' health is obviously the most important thing here.
If Fields isn't good to go though, bringing White back as a depth piece feels like it makes too much sense not to happen.
