Jets catch another break vs. Patriots with TreVeyon Henderson injury

The Jets really can't upset the Patriots ... can they?

Between Will Campbell and TreVeyon Henderson, the injury-ravaged New England Patriots are giving New York Jets fans every reason to hope for an upset win this coming weekend.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday morning that Henderson, who has struggled to find consistency in the early going, will likely miss several weeks with a high ankle sprain. The former Ohio State standout is not expected to need surgery, though a full timetable had not been announced as of publication.

New England could also be without Campbell, their rising star left tackle, after he suffered a right knee sprain against the Raiders. Both players were injured on the same second-quarter drive.

And while we’re not sure whether those in Florham Park are openly applauding the Patriots’ continued injuries, we don’t think they’re exactly complaining either.

What do Will Campbell and TreVeyon Henderson’s injuries mean for the New York Jets’ upset chances?

Caleb Lomu, a 2024 Freshman All-American at Utah and the No. 28 pick this past spring, will likely start in Campbell’s absence. Although Rhamondre Stevenson should draw most of the carries, Schefter reported the Patriots are likely to elevate practice squad player Lan Larison; New England also has Corey Kiner, who had 52 yards and a fumble on six carries in Week 5, on the active roster.

The Patriots entered Tuesday having placed 19 players on injured reserve, already two more than all of last season. You can see why talk of a Jets win should only skyrocket in the coming days.

But when have things ever been that simple?

Let’s start with the obvious: the Jets have their own offensive problems, most notably at running back and receiver, and aren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard. Frank Reich’s unit enters Week 6 averaging 18.6 points, which is tied with Cleveland for fifth-worst leaguewide.

Think about how many times we’ve watched the Jets’ offense fail against a talented defense — and speaking of the defense, they’re still struggling to play clean football; David Bailey’s three-sack breakout made it easy to ignore their ongoing penalty problems.

Interestingly, the Patriots opened as 9.5-point favorites (-110; bet $100 for a $190.91 payout), but DraftKings lowered the line to 7.5 points by Tuesday afternoon. That feels like a trap, especially since the game is in Foxborough.

And remember: the Patriots are 20-4 against the Jets since the start of 2014, so don’t go picking the latter in your survivor pool.
