The New York Jets are doing a little due diligence at the quarterback position. With Tyrod Taylor out nursing a knee injury, the Jets opted to bring in a pair of veteran QBs for workouts on Thursday, sparking some understandable concern from the fanbase.
Well-traveled NFL backup quarterbacks Nathan Peterman and C.J. Beathard reportedly participated in tryouts with the Jets this week. While the team ultimately didn’t sign either, their presence alone was enough to generate groans from Jets fans who have endured more than their fair share of subpar quarterbacks over the years.
That's especially true with Taylor, the Jets' expected backup QB, set to miss the entire preseason after undergoing a minor procedure on his knee. The Jets have expressed optimism that Taylor will be ready for Week 1, but nothing is set in stone.
The only other quarterbacks on the Jets' roster are penciled-in starter Justin Fields, undrafted rookie Brady Cook, and former UFL MVP and 2024 practice squad member Adrian Martinez. Still, there's no reason for Jets fans to be concerned...yet.
Jets fans shouldn't worry about Tyrod Taylor injury yet
Given Taylor's lengthy injury, it's understandable to have hesitation about his current status. The 15-year NFL veteran has missed considerable time due to various ailments in his career, most recently injuring his ribs as a member of the Giants in a game against the Jets in 2023.
But as of the time of writing, the Jets have given no reason to be concerned about his Week 1 availability. The new Jets regime has been remarkably transparent — and, more importantly, accurate — with their injury diagnoses this summer.
Glenn told reporters that rookie tight end Mason Taylor would miss about a week with a high-ankle sprain, and he returned almost exactly on schedule. Others, including Quinnen Williams and John Simpson, were given similar timelines and also returned on time.
If Glenn is saying Taylor should be ready for Week 1, there's no reason not to trust that as of now. It also makes sense for the Jets to work out potential veteran QB additions regardless of Taylor's Week 1 health status.
In fact, Taylor isn't the only Jets quarterback who has had an injury scare this summer. Fields suffered a dislocated toe earlier in training camp and missed a few days of practice. Cook was carted off with an ankle injury earlier this week and was subsequently limited the following day.
The Jets are doing their due diligence on potential camp arms to bring in if they need another warm body for the preseason. It's hard to imagine a scenario where the Jets would feel comfortable with either Peterman or Beathard as their QB2 entering 2025.
If anything, that job would probably go to Martinez or a roster cut candidate around the NFL. Peterman has started exactly one NFL game over the last six years. Beathard is a more feasible option, but even he has thrown just one touchdown since the start of the 2021 season.
The Jets are simply assessing their options as their quarterbacks work through minor injuries. Unless Taylor’s status takes a more concerning turn, there’s no reason to worry about the team’s QB situation right now.
