The New York Jets are still trying to figure out what their quarterback room will look like when they travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars in Week 15. While the team's starter is still uncertain, the Jets did add a familiar face to the depth chart on Wednesday.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed to reporters that his team had re-signed Adrian Martinez to their practice squad, with both Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields nursing injuries. Martinez and undrafted rookie Brady Cook were the only two healthy quarterbacks at Wednesday's practice.
Glenn was unable to provide clarity on Taylor and Fields' statuses, although the latter was spotted working off the side with trainers. Cook received first-team reps in practice and appears to be preparing for his first NFL start, although that depends on the status of the others in the room.
Taylor suffered a groin injury in the first quarter of last week's 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins and missed the remainder of the game. The longtime NFL journeyman previously battled a knee injury and seems likely to miss at least a week with his latest ailment.
As for Fields, he was inactive in Week 14 after popping up on the injury report with a knee injury of his own last week. Cook was signed to the 53-man roster to take Fields' place last Saturday, and now, he finds himself as the early favorite to start on Sunday.
Jets re-sign Adrian Martinez as Brady Cook prepares for his first NFL start
The 2024 UFL MVP, Martinez spent the entire 2024 season on the Jets' practice squad after earning the QB3 job in the summer. Although he never appeared in a game, the Jets thought highly enough of him to sign him to a futures deal in January.
Martinez competed with Cook for the third-string job in the preseason, and while both quarterbacks had their moments, the Jets ultimately went with the undrafted rookie instead. Martinez wasn't out of work for long, latching on with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad a few days later.
The Nebraska product would make his NFL debut in October of this year, entering the game to kneel the ball for his first and so far only NFL snap. Martinez spent the majority of the season on the 49ers' practice squad before he was released on Tuesday, possibly freeing him up to sign with the Jets.
All three of Taylor, Fields, and Cook appeared on the Jets' injury report on Wednesday, with the latter listed as a full participant due to an ankle injury. Neither Taylor nor Fields practiced.
Taylor is the presumptive starter if healthy, but his status also seems to be most in doubt. It remains to be seen if the Jets would stick with Cook or roll with Fields if the latter is healthy enough to play on Sunday. Martinez will be available to be elevated as QB2 if both Taylor and Fields can't go.
It wouldn't be a Jets season without some quarterback gymnastics. Cook could become the third different quarterback to start a game for the Jets this season on Sunday.
