The New York Jets opted to make zero quarterback moves on Monday or Tuesday this week, and in this case, the silence says just as much as any signing probably would.
With both Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields nursing injuries, it would’ve been easy to assume the team might bring in outside help this week. Instead, the Jets didn’t host a single quarterback on a workout on either Monday or Tuesday.
The only player the Jets brought in for a workout on Tuesday was defensive end Kingsley Jonathan, who was ultimately signed to the practice squad. But at least for now, the Jets are sticking with their three current quarterbacks.
The Jets seem to believe that at least one of Taylor or Fields will be healthy enough to play this Sunday when the team takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars. At least, that's what this would suggest.
Who will be the Jets' starting quarterback in Week 15?
Taylor is battling a groin injury suffered in Sunday’s loss. Fields remains on the mend from a knee issue, and Aaron Glenn didn’t sound overly optimistic about his status last week. But the Jets need at least two healthy quarterbacks on game day, and Brady Cook is now on the 53-man roster.
The decision not to bring anyone in suggests the Jets expect at least one, if not both, veterans to be available this weekend. We’ll know more on Wednesday when Glenn speaks and the team releases its first practice report, but for now, the Jets’ actions point toward quiet confidence.
Taylor remains the presumptive starter if healthy, though that groin injury makes his status uncertain. Fields remains more mysterious. Glenn expressed skepticism last week, and reports suggested Fields wasn’t eager to play limited wildcat packages and preferred to start outright.
How real the knee issue is — or how much is tied to role preference — is something we may finally learn this week, especially if Taylor is unable to play. Cook will almost certainly be active regardless. He’s on the 53 and just played the majority of the game against Miami.
Earlier this season, the Jets worked out the likes of Desmond Ridder, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and C.J. Beathard. Ridder and Thompson-Robinson remain free agents, while Beathard is on Detroit’s practice squad. Keep an eye on those names if the Jets do bring in quarterbacks this week.
For now, though, the message seems rather clear. The Jets didn’t add a quarterback because they don’t believe they need one. If Fields or Taylor were in danger of missing extended time, this week’s transaction wire would likely look a bit different.
We’ll learn the official injury designations soon, but all signs currently point to the Jets expecting better news than many probably assumed.
