So far this offseason, there's arguably been no bigger buzz around any singular player than third-year wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.

A throw-in at last trade deadline's Sauce Gardner deal, the former Indianapolis Colts draft pick seems to be involved in almost every major passing highlight coming out of the Jets' OTAs and minicamp amid his first full offseason with the team.

With the Colts, Mitchell was always buried on the depth chart behind the likes of Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce. But in New York, he's being counted on as the team's No. 2 option next to Garrett Wilson, and he seems primed to break out in 2026.

Not many expected Mitchell to pop the way he did this early in the summer, and the hype train continues to race down the tracks almost as fast as his 40-yard dash time.

Adonai Mitchell named biggest surprise of the Jets offseason thus far

ESPN had each of their respective beat writers name their team's biggest surprise of the 2026 offseason, and for the Jets, Rich Cimini named Mitchell.

"The Jets figured Mitchell would take a leap this offseason -- his first with the team -- but he exceeded their expectations. Mitchell, acquired from the Colts last November in the Sauce Gardner trade, solidified himself as the No. 2 receiver. He displayed a firm grasp of the new system, allowing him to flash his vertical speed. His chemistry with quarterback Geno Smith was quickly apparent. Mitchell should be a nice complement to Garrett Wilson."

As Cimini notes, the connection between Geno Smith and Mitchell seems to be getting stronger, and it should carry over through training camp and into September.

After Wilson's injury and Mitchell's addition to the Jets' wide receiver room, the former Texas standout stepped in as New York's impromptu No. 1 pass-catching option.

In eight appearances and four starts, Mitchell hauled in 24 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns for the Jets. Considering the quarterback play he was dealing with, the numbers are fairly impressive.

With a full offseason ingratiating himself in the new offensive system and a much more consistent quarterback to work with in Smith, Mitchell may just be one of the league's biggest breakout candidates in 2026.
