Jets' Aaron Rodgers supporters should just give up already after latest revelation

While there is still a strong contingent of New York Jets who are furious at the decision to end the Aaron Rodgers experiment after two seasons, it appears as though keeping him was never in the cards, no matter who they hired as head coach.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Woody Johnson would have been interested in bringing Rodgers back into the fold if his new coach and GM wanted it. However, after an exhaustive search that brought in over a dozen head coach candidates and multiple GMs, none of them wanted to keep the future Hall of Famer in town.

Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey chose to wipe the slate clean and start fresh as early as possible. While these two haven't shown that they are capable of building a winner just yet, they were in lockstep about moving on from Rodgers, as was every other candidate who showed interest in these jobs.

Rodgers appears to have "won" in his eyes and those of his supporters by making the playoffs with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, this was a completely pyrrhic victory, as he did not shove the Jets in a locker with as much fervor as he perhaps imagined. He joined a 10-7 team that lost in the wild card, and the Steelers went 10-7 and lost in the wild card in even more destructive fashion.

The problem Glenn and Mougey made was pivoting to Fields, who proved, not even two months in, that he is not an NFL starter and is barely an NFL backup. As bad as 2025 was, imagine if they had Rodgers.

They would have won around five or six games instead of three (missing out on David Bailey) while being saddled with a humongous dead cap hit, all while dealing with Rodgers' prickly personality.

Jets fans who support Rodgers and hate Glenn have created a reality where Glenn is simultaneously so inept that he doesn't deserve a second season as Jets head coach, but a quarterback like Rodgers, who put up essentially the exact same numbers in Pittsburgh as he did in New York, would have saved everything.

Rodgers working with the lowest average depth of target in the league alongside a first-time head coach and offensive coordinator (who has since been fired) with Josh Reynolds as the No. 2 wide receiver and one of the youngest rosters in the league would have apparently been a recipe for success.

That's saying nothing, of course, of a possibly disgruntled Garrett Wilson who may or may not have been in the fold.

The Jets aren't exactly in a very rosy position right now, but with some quality veterans added via free agency and Geno Smith in town, there's at least a clear path to improvement and a quality future. Once the Steelers' latest Wild Card pursuit ends and Rodgers retires, they will be left with a great deal of uncertainty shackling their attempts to build a contender.
