The New York Jets were bad in a lot of different areas in 2025, but one thing no one really saw coming was how poor their linebacker duo would be.

Jamien Sherwood and Quincy Williams, two players who were considered some of the best at their position in the league a few years ago, had horrendous seasons.

Williams got hurt early and was never able to find his groove once returning. The Jets let him walk in free agency, and he'll be playing for the Cleveland Browns in 2026. Sherwood, on the other hand, is here for the foreseeable future.

The safety-turned-linebacker is entering Year 2 of the three-year, $45 million contract he signed prior to free agency last spring, and needs to rebound if he's going to live up to his high salary.

Jamien Sherwood focusing on consistency this offseason

Speaking with reporters after an OTA practice, Sherwood was asked about his struggles in 2025 and how he plans to bounce back in 2026.

"Obviously, I felt like there were areas where I need to improve. There were some good plays. There were some bad plays. I just felt for myself, I definitely can be more consistent than I was. So again, another thing that I do look for going into the season, that’s just studying more, staying after practice more and just being a better teammate."

After leading the NFL in tackles in 2024, Sherwood regressed hard last season, struggling in former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks' scheme.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sherwood was the 35th-best linebacker in the NFL last season, earning a 65.7 grade.

One area where Sherwood struggled specifically was in coverage. He earned a coverage grade of 46.1, ranked 66th among 88 qualified linebackers.

The five-year veteran acknowledged that when speaking with reporters.

"When you line up, you read your keys, down and distance, the formation, when they do break the huddle, just putting your eyes in the right spot. So, if I’m in man coverage, just keeping my eyes on my guy the whole down, you know? Don’t get wandering eyes. Don’t look back at the quarterback. What’s going over there has nothing to do with me, just locking in on what I have to do."

Sherwood will have less responsibility in 2026, thanks to the addition of linebacker Demario Davis. Hopefully, that will lead to a return to prominence for the former fifth-round pick.
