Every training camp produces a fan favorite. Every fan favorite inspires a thousand tweets from restless fans (especially in the world of Jets fandom!) demanding he make the roster. Unfortunately, not all of them survive long enough to become actual NFL players.

Day 15 of your 2026 New York Jets Camp Countdown belongs to the Alabama Ankle Breaker, the Pocket-Sized Playmaker (non-patronizing), the Practice Squad Hero himself...it's Jamaal Pritchett.

Jets fans quickly fell in love with Pritchett last summer, but training camp darlings tend to have a shelf life. The question now is whether Pritchett's moment has already come and gone, or if he still has a path to sticking around in Florham Park.

Where Jamaal Pritchett stands entering Jets training camp

Pritchett enters training camp facing a much steeper climb than he did a year ago. After failing to make the Jets' initial 53-man roster last summer, Pritchett spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad.

The Jets did sign him to a futures contract after the season, which is notable in its own right, considering how few practice squad players were actually retained. Still, the competition around him has only gotten tougher.

Isaiah Williams and Kene Nwangwu have firmly established themselves as one of the NFL's best return duos, effectively eliminating the most obvious path Pritchett had to a roster spot.

The Jets also signed Caullin Lacy this offseason, another undersized slot receiver and return specialist with South Alabama ties. Then there's Rutgers product DT Sheffield, who fits a very similar mold at just 5-foot-7, 175 pounds.

Ironically, the Jets may have made Pritchett's path even more difficult by adding players who look a lot like him. At 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, Pritchett was never going to win a roster spot solely because of his receiving ability.

His value has always been tied to special teams and his ability to create explosive plays in space. The problem is that the Jets suddenly have several players competing for that exact role.

Revisiting the rise of the Jets' 2025 training camp darling

It is easy to understand why Jets fans became so attached to Pritchett in the first place. Pritchett was one of the most productive receivers in the Sun Belt Conference before he arrived in Florham Park as an undrafted free agent.

He hauled in 91 catches for 1,127 yards and nine touchdowns in his final season at South Alabama en route to earning First-Team All-Sun Belt honors. Between 2023 and 2024, he scored 17 receiving touchdowns and developed a reputation as one of the conference's most dangerous offensive weapons.

Pritchett flashed with the Jets throughout training camp and the preseason, quickly becoming one of the fan favorites of the entire roster. Many Jets fans believed he had earned a roster spot outright and should have been retained as the team's primary punt returner over the incumbent Xavier Gipson.

Instead, the Jets stuck with Gipson in a decision that backfired almost immediately. Gipson's infamous Week 1 fumble against the Steelers played a major role in his team's loss, and many fans assumed Pritchett's opportunity had finally arrived.

But the Jets would turn elsewhere after cutting bait with Gipson. They cycled through multiple returners throughout the season before eventually settling on Williams and Nwangwu.

All the while, Pritchett remained on the practice squad. The surprising part isn't necessarily that he failed to make the roster as an undrafted rookie. But rather it's that the Jets never turned to him afterward, instead opting to sign multiple players off the street.

What would make 2026 a success for Jamaal Pritchett

A successful season for Pritchett in 2026 likely starts with simply finding a way to stick around.

Can he beat out players like Lacy and Sheffield for a practice squad spot? Can he once again force Jets fans to take notice with a strong summer? Can he prove he offers enough value as both a slot receiver and returner to justify keeping him around?

Those are the questions he'll have to answer over the next few months. Last summer, Pritchett became a fan favorite. This summer, he has to become something more than that.

Training camp darlings come and go every year. Jamaal Pritchett's challenge is proving that he doesn't have to be just another one.
