Giants steal top offensive coaching target away from Aaron Glenn and Jets

This coach would rather team up with a Harbaugh for the fourth time.

Before the New York Jets landed Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator, they held in-person interviews with veteran offensive coordinators Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman.

Neither landed the job, but there was chatter that both Bevell and Roman would still join Reich's staff in a smaller capacity, possibly as a quarterbacks coach and run game coordinator, respectively.

Instead, The Athletic's Charlotte Carroll reported late Thursday night that Roman would be joining the New York Giants offensive staff under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Roman's role has yet to be officially named, but it'll likely be as the run game coordinator for the Jets' crosstown rival.

Jets miss out on Greg Roman, joins Giants offensive staff

The move makes sense for Roman. The Jets weren't willing to give him full control over the offense, so of course, he would take a similar position on a staff he's more familiar with.

It will be the second time in Roman's career that he'll work under John Harbaugh, having been the Baltimore Ravens' tight ends coach and senior offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018, and the offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022.

Funnily enough, it'll be the fourth time in his career he's worked under a Harbaugh, having served as Jim Harbaugh's offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014 with the San Francisco 49ers and from 2024 to 2025 as the Los Angeles Chargers OC.

He was fired after the Chargers' early playoff exit this past season, mostly due to the fact that Los Angeles was unable to consistently produce an effective passing game.

Roman would've been a solid addition to the Jets staff; his best ability is scheming up a quality ground game, despite working with less-than-ideal circumstances.

The Chargers were missing several key pieces from their offense throughout this past season, including All-Pro caliber tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, and first-round running back Omarion Hampton.

Despite the limitations, the Chargers still finished 12th in rushing yards per game and 13th in EPA/rush according to Sumer Sports.

Of course, Roman's best body of work was his stint as the Ravens' offensive coordinator. Armed with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, Baltimore never finished lower than third in rushing yards per game from 2019 to 2022.

Instead of coaching for the Jets, the New Jersey native will work under Harbaugh and Nagy as they try to turn the Giants around. He'll look to replicate that run-game magic with the likes of Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Tyrone Tracy.
