Geno Smith ruled out from Jets' preseason opener with foot injury

New York Jets fans will have to wait just a little bit longer to see Geno Smith's second debut in uniform, as NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported just over an hour before kickoff that the veteran quarterback would be inactive for Friday night's preseason opener.

Smith appears to be dealing with foot soreness, but Garafolo made clear in his report that the injury does not seem serious, and it shouldn't affect his health in the long term.

"It’s nothing the team is concerned about and if this was a regular-season game, he’d be a go. But for now, a cautionary route for the team."

The preseason opener will officially be the Cade Klubnik show, and the rookie quarterback will get some reps with the first team as Smith watches from the sidelines.

When Jets head coach Aaron Glenn announced earlier in the week that he would, in fact, be playing his starters for the team's preseason opener, there was legitimate reason for excitement.

Not only would it be fans' first glimpse at some of New York's newest additions, but they would also get to see their new quarterback getting some reps with the Jets' top weapons. The idea of Smith throwing the ball to the likes of Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and Mason Taylor has been stuck in their minds since March.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait at least another week before that vision comes to fruition.

The preseason opener also felt like an opportunity for Smith to shake off some of the lousy reports that followed him throughout the week during joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reporters on the scene documented the veteran quarterback's struggles well.

This would've been his chance to shut those concerns down and carve up a Buccaneers secondary that features several young players competing for a starting job.

New York Jets preseason opener officially the Cade Klubnik show

With Smith sidelined, the Jets are going to get a chance to get a really good look at their rookie quarterback. Klubnik should see plenty of playing time, deep into the first half.

Concerns have lingered since the start of training camp that the Jets have a desperate need at backup quarterback. After all, Klubnik has no NFL experience, and Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe don't exactly inspire confidence at QB2.

After an up-and-down first few weeks of training camp, Klubnik can put a chokehold on the starting job tonight by showing out against the Buccaneers.
