Geno Smith's biggest fan at Jets training camp may be standing on the sidelines

One of the early storylines out of New York Jets training camp has been the performance of veteran quarterback Geno Smith, who has seemingly gotten a pretty strong hold of the offense.

After a down year that saw him put up numbers akin to his early days in New York, Smith seems primed for a bounce-back in 2026. He's working with a supporting cast that rivals what surrounded him in Seattle, when he had some of the best seasons of his career.

A competent offensive line, a wide array of weaponry with different skill sets, and a chip on his shoulder are what should be driving Smith to return to form this upcoming season, and he's got all the support in the world from his teammates and coaches.

New offensive coordinator Frank Reich seemed to be a driving force in landing Smith as the team's starting quarterback, and now that the veteran play caller has him, he can't help but heap his praises whenever he can.

Reich spoke with reporters following Friday morning's training camp practice and couldn't help but speak glowingly about his veteran quarterback.

"Geno's the leader. He's the leader of the offense and, make no mistake about it, in every way, shape, and form. To me, what has come crystal clear to me in this early time in training camp - the attribute that sticks out to me is his laser focus. This man is laser-focused like people don't understand. He comes to work. He comes to work, and he is locked in. And I feel like the whole offense plays off of that. That's a really big deal."

It's cool to see Reich embracing Smith as his quarterback and touting him as the leader that this young Jets team desperately needs.

Reich even set aside Smith's intangibles for a moment, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, and gushed about his "pure" throwing mechanics.

"There's only a couple guys in the league that I would say are pure. Geno's one of them."

Reich said Smith looks like a 28-year-old out on the field, despite the fact that the veteran quarterback will be turning 36 in October.

Much of the Jets' hopes and aspirations lie in the hands of both Reich and Smith this upcoming season, and it's encouraging to see the coach embracing his quarterback. Hopefully, it leads to wins come September.
