The NY Jets have to prioritize signing some of their young stars to ensure that Aaron Glenn's plan for long-term success can go off without a hitch. Garrett Wilson, who has become one of the best wide receivers in the game despite wretched quarterback play, is at the very top of the list of extension candidates.
After a season in which New York was inundated with trade rumors and reports that Wilson is unhappy, his first availability at OTAs should have made Jets fans very happy. To hear Wilson say it, he doesn't want to wear anything other than Jets green for the rest of his career.
Wilson said that he wants to remain a Jet for life after a rocky season, saying that he is only unhappy with losing and not unhappy with being a member of the Jets. Being able to make it out of last season relatively unscathed is a sign that Wilson is committed to turning this thing around.
Wilson said that there have been some talks with the Jets and his agent about a long-term contract. After a season in which the Jets subjected him to some of the most painful disappointments a player and fan base can endure, it's nice to see Wilson come out of that mess with a smile on his face and a desire to win.
Garrett Wilson wants to remain with NY Jets long-term
Wilson caught 101 passes for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns last season, which should be held in even more high regard considering that Davante Adams was taking targets away for a good chunk of the end of the season and the offense as a whole was not operating at peak efficiency.
Wilson will likely try to earn a contract that pays him around $30 million per year in average annual value, which is what the 49ers paid Brandon Aiyuk just one season ago. Wilson is a better player than Aiyuk at this point in his career, which could be something his agent tries to hammer home.
The Jets have some promise on offense, but they could be reduced to ash if Wilson either asks for a trade or doesn't replicate his elite performance.
