Frank Reich can't help but rave about Adonai Mitchell's 'it factor'

Considering that New York offensive coordinator Frank Reich has experienced the Adonai Mitchell breakout in real time, he was always bound to have some key takeaways. 

Mitchell continued his phenomenal summer on Tuesday, hauling in a contested catch against cornerback Brandon Stephens. He’s long since erased any doubts about his role as the No. 2 receiver behind Garrett Wilson. 

Speaking with reporters, Reich praised Mitchell as someone who is “highly confident but willing to explain.”

“That’s the it factor,” Reich explained. “When you have extreme confidence but humility to bounce it off. That’s the fuel that we want to fire up our engine, and we’ve got that.”

Every team has a camp standout, and we collectively like the underdog. Look no further than backup tight end Jelani Woods and his journey back from multiple season-ending surgeries. 

Everything that Mitchell has done since joining the Jets last November is worthy of kudos. He was arguably their best receiving threat down the stretch after Wilson landed on IR, and the former Texas standout has consistently stood out dating back to the offseason workouts. 

Above all else, it’s been clear for weeks that both the quarterbacks and the offensive staff trust Mitchell. He’s built a rapport with both Geno Smith and Cade Klubnik, the latter of whom has also enjoyed a strong summer. 

This admittedly sounds obvious, but trust is crucial. Mitchell doesn’t have the reputation or resume to consistently earn targets if there’s a lack of trust, both as a player and as a person, and that’s not a weakness. Just the fact that he’s succeeding in building those connections is a testament to how hard he’s worked. 

None of this is to say that Mitchell is about to explode for 80 catches and 1,200 yards. Had he spent all of last season with the Jets, he would have been on pace for roughly 50 receptions and 600 yards. Most teams in the Jets’ position would absolutely take that from their No. 2 receiver. 

We reiterated throughout the offseason that the hype surrounding Mitchell was completely warranted. He went from being an extra part of the Sauce Gardner trade to someone who could easily become a top weapon for Smith or Klubnik.

With the way he’s played and how all-in the Jets are on Mitchell, those stats would feel underwhelming at this point. What better way for Reich and Mitchell to get another laugh on the Colts?
