Former NY Jets head coach Robert Saleh is out of work following his unexpected premature departure from the organization this week. While Saleh may have failed as a head coach in New York, he's not expected to be without a job for long.
Saleh has a stellar reputation as one of the best defensive minds in the sport today and should have his pick of the litter when it comes to defensive coordinator jobs next offseason. For now, Saleh and his family are taking what is likely a much-needed vacation, but he should be back in the NFL in 2025.
There are a number of obvious landing spots for Saleh next season. Many have proposed a return to San Francisco or a trip to Green Bay or Los Angeles to join one of the LaFleur brothers on the Packers or Rams.
Former Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards has another idea. Edwards called his shot on social media this week, insisting that Saleh will be hired as the new defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions this offseason after current coordinator Aaron Glenn leaves to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Will Robert Saleh be hired by the Lions in 2025?
Edwards' theory is bold, but it makes plenty of sense. Saleh is originally from Michigan, growing up in a suburb of Detroit and even spending his high school and college careers in the state. He has deep ties to the area and would likely jump at the opportunity to coach the Lions.
While he doesn't have any immediate connections to Lions head coach Dan Campbell, Saleh's reputation and his local ties are enough to make this a very realistic landing spot for the former Jets coach.
The other part of Edwards' prediction makes sense too. Glenn has become one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the NFL, and the Jaguars could be looking for a new coach if they part ways with Doug Pederson, which many expect them to at some point.
Glenn has even been mentioned as a possible replacement for Saleh in 2025. The former NFL cornerback notably spent eight seasons as a member of the Jets between 1994 and 2001. In fact, the Jets actually interviewed Glenn for their head coach job in 2021 before ultimately choosing Saleh.
Whether he ends up in Detroit or not, Saleh is not expected to have much trouble finding work. He managed to take the 31st-ranked defense in the NFL and transform them into a perennial top-five unit.
He's helped catapult the careers of players like Quincy Williams, Bryce Huff, John Franklin-Myers, Michael Carter II, Jamien Sherwood, and many others. He's overseen the development of future stars like Sauce Gardner, Quinnen Williams, Jermaine Johnson, etc.
Robert Saleh may not be a great head coach at this stage of his career, but he's proven to be one of the best defensive minds in football. His future remains bright despite his untimely Jets firing.
