Former Jets QB calls out Aaron Rodgers over handling of Mike Williams debacle
By Ryan Heckman
It has been an eventful week for the NY Jets, and for more than one reason. Tuesday morning came the biggest news, of course, as the Jets announced they had traded for wide receiver Davante Adams.
Reuniting Adams with Aaron Rodgers obviously brings some hope to the Jets organization and gives the two of them a reason to smile. Hopefully, this is a move that ends up paying dividends for the Jets and can turn their season around.
Aside from the Adams news, though, a smaller storyline came toward the end of Monday Night Football against the Bills when Rodgers dropped back to pass and looked the way of Mike Williams. It could have been a play that set the Jets up for either a potentially game-tying or game-winning score.
But, Williams slipped and fell, and the pass was picked off by Bills defensive back Taron Johnson to essentially end the game. Buffalo would go on to get a first down and run out the clock on the following drive.
After the game, Rodgers publicly blamed Williams for that interception. But, it didn't stop there. Also on Tuesday, Rodgers made his regular appearance on The Pat McAfee Show where he was asked about all of this week's happenings thus far, the Adams trade included.
When it came to the topic of that interception and Williams getting the blame, Rodgers again insinuated it was on the wide receiver.
One former Jets quarterback saw the clip and took to social media to share his thoughts on why he believed Rodgers was in the wrong for his actions.
Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't wrong in his thinking. Rodgers chose to handle it the way he did, which shouldn't come as a surprise knowing the quarterback's tendencies. However, Fitzpatrick is a different type and would have handled the situation differently.
Whether or not you agree with Rodgers' handling, one thing is clear: Williams is as good as gone.
The NY Jets will trade Mike Williams in the coming days
After the Jets landed Adams on Tuesday, they formed the top three wide receiver room including him, Garrett Wilson, and Allen Lazard. Some might not have believed Lazard would be where he is, at the moment, but Rodgers' buddy is leading the league in touchdown receptions.
There's no way Lazard is going to be benched. It's Williams who becomes the odd man out and looks as though he has played his last game for the Jets.
Where could Williams be headed? There seems to be a very logical and obvious first answer to that question. The Kansas City Chiefs are shorthanded at wide receiver after losing Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown, and they've made moves previously to help Patrick Mahomes prior to the deadline.
What the Jets will get for Williams, though, might not be all that much. With his future obviously set to be headed elsewhere, New York probably won't fetch more than a later Day 3 pick.
