The tight end position hasn't been a sexy one, in recent years, for the New York Jets. After using a few recent draft selections on tight ends in the past four or five offseasons, the Jets came away with Kenyon Sadiq in the first round this year.
Needless to say, this position has changed drastically in the matter of one offseason. But this isn't about current Jets tight ends. This is about one of those recent draft selections who has since moved on, but now is facing a tough reality.
2023 seventh-round pick Zack Kuntz spent two and a half years with the team before making his way to the UFL's DC Defenders. Then, earlier this offseason, he signed with the Miami Dolphins.
However, just four months after signing with Miami, Kuntz was released.
Former New York Jets draft pick Zack Kuntz may see his career fading fast
The coming weeks are going to be very welling for the Old Dominion product by way of Penn State. It is difficult enough for a seventh-rounder to stick around in this league, but Kuntz managed to do it for a couple of years in New York.
Sure, he only appeared in one game each of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. But, he's done it. He's done what many late-round guys and undrafted free agents strive to do. He's managed to keep his career alive.
In Miami, he might have felt like he had a shot to hang around for a while on a roster that was rebuilding all over its depth chart.
Now, after an offseason that saw the Dolphins draft a pair of tight ends in Will Kacmarek and Seydou Traore, not to mention the signing of Ben Sims, things are looking grim for Kuntz.
If it was hard for Kuntz to stick in Miami longer than just a few months, it might be darn-near impossible to do so on another roster.
This is nothing against Kuntz at all. But, it isn't like anyone on that Dolphins depth chart is a Pro Bowl talent. Greg Dulcich is penciled in as the starter, currently, if that says anything.
Again, as a seventh-round selection, he has done well for himself over three years. Hopefully, for Kuntz's sake, he is able to catch on with another team before training camp and ultimately, at the very least, cement a practice squad role.
