One of the New York Jets' most underrated storylines throughout the offseason has been their quest to replace kicker Nick Folk, who was one of the most consistent members of the 2025 roster.

New York has cycled through several names this offseason, including international prospect Lenny Krieg and ex-Pro Bowler Younghoe Koo, before finally sticking with Cade York and Jason Sanders heading into training camp.

It's felt like both Sanders and York have been neck and neck throughout training camp, and even in the Jets' first preseason game, both kickers nailed every single one of their attempts.

But the reports out of practice on Monday suggest one kicker is pulling ahead of the other, and a few more efficient performances through the preseason and training camp may just be enough to land him the starting job.

According to Jets X Factor's Connor Long, who was in attendance at Jets practice on Monday, Sanders was significantly better on his kicking attempts than York. He made seven of eight attempts, while York only managed to hit five of eight.

Sanders, a former All-Pro with the Miami Dolphins, is hoping to put a stranglehold on the Jets' kicking competition. For any fan who watched New York's preseason opener, they're likely hoping he's the man for the job.

York may have made all of his field goal attempts, but his second make was very nearly a miss. On the last play of the first half, York trotted out for a 38-yard attempt that the officials called good, but it just barely made it as it sailed over the right-side crossbar.

It could very easily have been called no good.

Sanders, meanwhile, made a 47-yarder with ease and was also a perfect one-for-one on his lone extra point attempt.

New York Jets may not be done adding competition at kicker

Of course, there's also a chance that the Jets aren't satisfied with what they currently have. There are several kicking competitions going on across multiple NFL teams' training camps right now, and tough decisions will have to be made.

When we get to roster cutdown day, another kicker may shake loose that the Jets feel better about than both Sanders and York, and New York could add another leg to the mix before the start of the regular season.

On Monday, the Washington Commanders cut ties with ex-San Francisco 49ers draft pick Jake Moody, who made 10 of 11 field goal attempts in six games with the Commanders last season.

He could be a name the Jets keep an eye on while their own kicking battle continues.
