Will the Jets go on a late-summer spending spree?

The New York Jets are preparing for a year of learning under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey, which has led to their offseason spending being centered primarily around taking risks on younger players on one-year deals, fighting for a chance to prove themselves in the pros.

This fan base is understandably a bit disappointed with the fact that this team appears to be done making any big moves. However, one analyst believes that the Jets are perfectly positioned to strike and turn this dull period into a time to bring in someone who changes their fortunes.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell named the Jets the "most likely to go on a late-summer spending spree" in the next few months, citing the fact that the roster is still threadbare in some key areas and some positions are being carried, in a sense, by a few high-performing players making up for a lack of depth.

There is likely one player who will end up on the Jets' 53-man roster that is currently awaiting a call from Mougey.

Wide receiver will be the position the Jets could theoretically add without too much consternation, as the Jets are currently poised to let Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard battle it out for the WR2 role. Even though the idea of signing a veteran like Amari Cooper or Keenan Allen doesn't fit the timeline, the Jets could still make a move for someone with a bit of electricity.

The pass rush room could use one more veteran in the mix. Jermaine Johnson is coming off an injury, Will McDonald's ability to generate pressures is nullified by his subpar run defense, and the team's top backups are the below-average Micheal Clemons and fifth-round rookie Tyler Baron.

The Jets have enough financial flexibility to make one of these moves. While veterans might not be willing to join a Jets team projected by many to enter a rebuilding year, Mougey might be able to reel one in if he meets their financial price point.

The Jets have built the bones of the roster that will try to get the Glenn and Mougey era started off on the right foot, but they have the ability to add one more veteran who can ever so slightly move the needle in what could be a very chaotic AFC East.
