Dolphins fans are begging for Zach Wilson and Jets fans can't stop laughing

Be careful what you ask for...

New York Jets fans are no strangers to the Zach Wilson experience. This fan base spent three years watching Wilson throw passes into the dirt, miss wide-open receivers, and single-handedly kill drives with his decision-making.

That's what makes it so hilarious to watch Miami Dolphins fans desperately calling for Wilson to save their season amidst struggles from starter Tua Tagovailoa. Yes, after Thursday night's loss to the Buffalo Bills, Dolphins fans have seen enough — and they want Wilson.

The former No. 2 overall pick signed a one-year, fully guaranteed $6 million contract this offseason to be Miami's QB2 behind Tagovailoa in a move that was widely panned by NFL analysts at the time.

Just three games into the season, the Dolphins sit at 0-3 ahead of their Week 4 Monday Night Football matchup with the Jets. And if many fans had their way, Wilson would be the one starting under center.

It's been an inauspicious start to the 2025 season for Tagovailoa and the Miami passing attack. The Alabama product has thrown four interceptions and fumbled twice in just three games, averaging a lowly 6.5 yards per attempt in the process.

Tagovailoa's -0.084 EPA/play ranks 27th out of 30 qualified quarterbacks, ahead of just Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, and J.J. McCarthy. The turnovers have been an issue, but so too has Miami's inability to push the ball down the field. Much of the blame has understandably fallen on the starting QB.

But for as bad as Tagovailoa has been, what these Dolphins fans don't seem to realize is that it absolutely can get worse — and it almost certainly would if Wilson was forced into action.

It's not even as though Wilson had a particularly strong summer. The former BYU star finished with a brutal 47.1 Pro Football Focus grade in three preseason games, ranking 21st out of 24 qualified quarterbacks (min. 40 dropbacks). He was one of the worst quarterbacks in the preseason this year.

This isn't an anomaly for Wilson, of course. In three years with the Jets, Wilson put together a statistical resume that rivals some of the worst quarterbacks we've seen at the NFL level in recent memory.

Wilson finished his Jets career with 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 33 starts, adding a whopping 17 fumbles while completing an abysmal 57% of his passes. There aren't many quarterbacks in recent NFL history who have started as many games as Wilson while being that consistently terrible.

His one-year stint as the Denver Broncos' third-string quarterback appears to have boosted his stock despite the fact that he didn't appear in a single game. But the fact that he was outplayed this summer by seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers should tell Dolphins fans all they need to know.

Jets fans have seen this story before. They know how this tale ends. But what's interesting is that Dolphins fans should be acutely aware of the full extent of the Zach Wilson experience as well. In three career starts against Miami, Wilson never actually threw a single touchdown pass.

So when Dolphins fans are chanting for Zach Wilson to rescue their season, Jets fans can only shake their heads and think 'Be careful what you wish for.' Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side — it's just a different shade of terrible.
