Some things never change.

Zach Wilson is learning the hard way that a change of scenery doesn’t magically fix your flaws, and Miami Dolphins reporters are starting to echo the same concerns New York Jets fans shouted for years.

Accuracy, timing, and anticipation are three of the foundational elements of Mike McDaniel’s offense. Unfortunately for Miami, they might be backing up the league’s most injury-prone quarterback with someone who lacks all three.

Wilson signed a fully guaranteed one-year, $6 million contract with the Dolphins this offseason after spending 2024 buried on the Broncos’ depth chart. He never saw the field in Denver and quickly became an afterthought, until Miami came calling with a surprising vote of confidence.

The decision raised eyebrows across the league, and not just because of the money. Wilson’s skill set is a bizarre fit for McDaniel’s scheme, and Tua Tagovailoa’s durability concerns make the backup QB position all the more important in Miami.

Unfortunately, Dolphins fans have already seen those issues this spring.

Dolphins fans are quickly discovering the Zach Wilson experience

Wilson has reportedly been a mess throughout OTAs and minicamp. The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson described Wilson’s offseason as “uneven,” noting he threw two interceptions in a single session, one returned for a pick-six, while nearly another was picked off.

Meanwhile, fellow Dolphins beat reporter Omar Kelly tweeted that Wilson “he has an arm but his accuracy isn’t there and his decision making needs improvement" following a recent minicamp practice.

Dolphins reporters also noted Wilson’s issues with timing, which he acknowledged by telling the media it was the first time in his life he’s been told he’s late on throws, which is a statement that either makes him a liar or one of the worst listeners in football.

That’s what made the Dolphins’ decision to sign Wilson so puzzling in the first place. Not only is he a clear schematic mismatch in McDaniel’s timing-based system, but he’s also one hit to Tagovailoa away from seeing the field.

There’s no long-term plan here, no developmental runway. Just a prayer that he won’t be needed.

Of course, Jets fans don’t need to squint to see how this plays out. They watched Wilson torpedo three straight seasons in New York despite a top-five defense, a few excellent offensive building blocks, and one of the more talented rosters the team has had in years.

At a certain point, the excuses run out. The setting changes. The names change. But the same old Zach Wilson shows up. Dolphins fans are finding that out the hard way.
