The NY Jets brought in Davante Adams to make a real playoff push this season, but if that doesn't happen, the trade can still be a net positive for the Jets in the long term. It appears that his veteran leadership is already taking effect within the locker room, especially for the young Garrett Wilson.
Ever since Adams joined the embattled 2024 Jets, he has made it perfectly clear that he intends to be a vocal leader in the locker room. His much-discussed postgame speech following the brutal loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, which Aaron Rodgers described as the "realest" speech he had heard, showed everyone what time it was.
Adams has also made it clear that there is no internal rivalry for the WR1 spot between the two star wideouts. In fact, they're building upon a bond that was formed long before Adams walked in the door.
Garrett Wilson is getting to learn from one of his childhood idols
Last offseason, Adams and Wilson got together for an impromptu dinner while the former happened to be in town. Wilson expressed to his former childhood hero just how much he looked up to him, while simultaneously gathering some reconnaissance on what it's like in Aaron Rodgers' world.
Adams returned the favor by describing Wilson as one of his favorite receivers in the league. The dinner evolved into a football symposium as the two picked each others' brains.
The conversation wasn't limited to just trading compliments and talking ball. They also specifically imagined what it would be like for the two of them to play together one day.
It wasn't something they necessarily thought was likely, but eventually, rumors swirled about a Rodgers and Adams reunion. There has been buzz about it since this past offseason.
And here we are. The pipedream of playing opposite one another that was discussed over a year ago is now the reality for the pair. It's clear that the two of them are soaking up every second of working together that they can.
Adams said of their relationship, "It’s fun to work with him and to see him work every day. And I’m definitely looking for this continuing."
The two can often be spotted chopping it up before games and at practice. It makes sense for Wilson to absorb as much information as he can. Not every young receiver has the luxury of a Davante Adams-caliber player to emulate and learn from. Last week against the Houston Texans, the world got a glimpse of just how dynamic this duo can truly be.
Whether or not this will be enough to tip the scales and turn the season around remains to be seen. But if all else fails, at least Adams can be a valuable mentor for the talented young phenom. It's already a win for both the Jets and Garrett Wilson in the long run.
