New York Jets cornerback D'Angelo Ponds is likely the team's long-term plan at nickel cornerback. They wouldn't have used the No. 50 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on him otherwise, using a premium draft choice on the former Indiana defensive back.
But before Ponds earns a spot in the starting lineup, he's going to have to prove he's better than the veteran ahead of him, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. The former Tennessee Titans draft pick whom the Jets acquired in a midseason trade last year.
Brownlee played well down the stretch in 2025 and has taken his game to another level in 2026. He's been an incredibly positive presence in the Jets' secondary, playing sticky coverage and laying the boom in the run game.
While Brownlee and Ponds are competing with one another for playing time, their relationship is absolutely a positive one, and there's no zero negativity in the Jets locker room between the two Jets cornerbacks.
D'Angelo Ponds and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. are close despite internal competition
In an exclusive interview with The Jet Press, Ponds was asked about his relationship with Brownlee, and how each player makes the other one better despite fighting for playing time over one another.
"I've got a great relationship with Jarvis Brownlee. He's a guy that grew up in the Miami area, I grew up in Miami, so we kinda already knew each other from there... When I was training for the combine, he trained at the same place... Like you said, picking each other's brain, stuff I can learn from him, and things he learn from me. It's just been a good competition."
If Brownlee wasn't playing well, it would be much easier to justify pulling him off the field in favor of the Jets' second-round pick. But the fact of the matter is that he's been a relatively stabilizing force in New York's secondary.
In five games in 2026, Brownlee has racked up 13 tackles and two tackles for loss, allowing only 15 receptions in coverage. Aaron Glenn has often utilized him as a blitzer.
There's no doubt that Ponds' time will eventually come, but having two talented young cornerbacks on the roster is nothing but positive for the Jets. Some may call it a first-world problem.
Regardless, it's cool to see that despite the young players competing for similar roles, there's nothing but positive vibes between the two of them, and it shows just how good things are in the Jets' locker room.
