Over the summer, New York Jets fans couldn't have been more excited about the prospect of adding D'Angelo Ponds to their secondary. After an awesome run with Indiana that culminated in a national championship, Ponds was expected to be a Day 1 contributor.

Unfortunately, an offseason calf injury delayed the rookie's development. He missed all of training camp and preseason with the ailment and lost out on valuable reps leading into the 2026 season. It led to the Jets deciding to ease their rookie cornerback in slowly, making him inactive for the team's first two games and limiting his reps in their outings since.

There's no doubt that Ponds will eventually become a staple of the Jets' secondary, given his pedigree as a defensive back, and the adversity he has fought through over the last few months will only make his story that much better.

D'Angelo Ponds talks about his long offseason from college to the pros

In an exclusive interview with The Jet Press, Ponds spoke about how his rookie season has been going and detailed the process from the end of his final season in college to his transition into the NFL.

"Going from a national championship season to training for the combine, training for Pro Day, not really getting a break, and then hopping right into rookie minicamp and OTAs, and then going to training camp, it was a long process."

It seems like Ponds' body never really caught a break from January to the summer, as he was consistently pushing himself to the max in preparation for not only the college football championship, but also his first NFL season. Eventually, that kind of intensity will catch up with you.

"Any rookie can tell you that the rookie year is the longest year, kinda learning that from my vets, but it was tough for me just to be out with an injury. It's something I learned from, how to just take care of my body... But, (I'm) battling back from that and taking advantage of every opportunity I get moving forward."

Ponds' time to be a starter with the Jets will come. The team wouldn't have invested the 50th overall pick in him if they didn't believe in his capability as a player.

But for now, he's going to continue to keep working and get better in preparation for that opportunity to get on the field and prove the Jets right for believing in him this past April.
