Concerning report exposes extent of Aaron Rodgers’ injuries in 2024
By Justin Fried
Aaron Rodgers made one promise to himself and his NY Jets teammates after returning from a torn Achilles that cost him an entire year of his career in 2023. That promise was to play every game the following season.
To this point, Rodgers has made good on that promise. The future Hall of Famer has started all 13 games for the Jets so far this season, and while there have been plenty of bumps in the road, he's made sure to be on the field come gamedays.
Rodgers has been forced to deal with a few injuries this season and has been a frequent resident on the injury report. While the Jets claim Rodgers is healthier than he's been in weeks, a concerning new report details the extent of his injuries.
Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported on Sunday that Rodgers has been playing through a Grade-2 hamstring strain (basically described as a tear), an MCL sprain, and a high-ankle sprain. He's fought through the pain to play, but it's clearly taken a toll on his effectiveness.
NY Jets QB Aaron Rodgers is determined to play through multiple serious injuries
In 13 games, Rodgers has thrown for 2,966 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while completing 63 percent of his passes. He's averaging a career-low 6.5 yards per attempt, ranks 21st in EPA/play, and ranks a lowly 33rd out of 35 qualifiers in completion percentage over expected.
Rodgers' injuries have clearly impacted his mobility and exposed various flaws in his current game. He's hesitant to throw downfield or look over the middle of the field. His 6.8 average air yards rank 30th among qualified QBs.
Rodgers is coming off arguably his best game of the season in the Jets' Week 14 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The four-time MVP completed 27-of-39 passes for 339 yards, one touchdown, and zero turnovers. That game marked the first time in 35 starts that Rodgers has surpassed 300 passing yards.
Perhaps there is some credence to the Jets' claim that Rodgers is healthier now than earlier in the season. Unfortunately, it's a classic case of too little, too late. The Jets sit at 3-10 and have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for the 14th consecutive season.
Rodgers seems determined to finish out the season as the starter despite his injuries. He wants to go the distance for both his teammates and himself. Glazer's report indicates that Rodgers' toughness has "raised him up a lot in the eyes of his teammates."
The players respect Rodgers for putting his body through weekly torment. They respect him for fighting through the pain and gutting out performances like last week.
The Jets may have fallen short of their postseason aspirations, but their quarterback could still achieve a personal milestone by limping to the finish line and starting the final four games of the season.
