The New York Jets have locked their roster (and their fans) in a very unenviable position with regard to their pass rush room. Not only are they one of the worst defensive end groupings in football, but they aren't in a position to bring in more reinforcements.
Will McDonald is the league's worst run defender, overshadowing his pass rush skills. Micheal Clemons is a complete zero on the field, and backup Braiden McGregor has blown multiple opportunities to prove himself worthy of more time. Jermaine Johnson has been solid, but he is just one player.
Pro Football Focus shows that not only are the Jets' defensive ends being double-teamed at some of the lowest rates in the league, but they are also getting pressures at some of the worst clips in the NFL. Teams are not scared of this unit.
To make matters worse, the Jets currently have three of the nine worst-graded edge rushers in football in PFF's eyes, and struggling rookie Tyler Baron would have been right alongside them if he had enough snaps to qualify. The lack of talent on this defensive line could be enough to sink this defense.
Advanced stats show Jets are one of worst pass rush rooms in NFL
The Jets clearly can't fix every one of their big issues in one offseason, but they did spend many of their more valuable resources on reinforcing the offensive line and fixing a thin defensive tackle room. So far, Armand Membou looks terrific, and the 1-2 punch of Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs next to Quinnen Williams has been a quality combination.
Unfortunately, the two areas Mougey was unable to address were the non-Garrett Wilson wide receiver room and the pass rusher stable. Using a fourth-round pick on Arian Smith and a fifth-rounder on Baron were not enough to turn these into above-average units.
The only hope the Jets have of becoming even a respectable pass rush unit is McDonald becoming an even bigger sack threat than he was and Johnson picking up the slack for everyone else as an edge-setter. Every snap Clemons, McGregor, or Baron plays is just asking for trouble.
No matter what the problem is, playing practice squad standout Eric Watts more snaps is not going to be a solution that makes many people very happy. If the Jets don't get McDonald and Johnson lighting up a quarterback, their defense is easy pickings for just about every quarterback.
