Cam Ward presents the Jets defense with a prime opportunity to snap their interception drought

Everyone is familiar with the infamous stat that plagued the New York Jets throughout the 2025 season. Somehow, across the span of 17 games, they failed to haul in a single interception, something never done before in the modern history of the NFL.

It seems almost impossible. Not once throughout the entire season did a single tipped pass, batted ball at the line of scrimmage, or arm punt from an opposing quarterback make its way into the hands of a Jets defender. It's surely been a point of emphasis from New York's defensive coaching staff all offseason.

Entering Week 1, the Jets find themselves with an ideal opportunity to snap their dreaded streak. Cam Ward is one of the league's rising young quarterbacks, for sure, but the Tennessee Titans gunslinger isn't perfect and could be ripe for the taking.

In 2025, Ward had an interception-worthy throw rate of 2.5%, ranked 16th in the league among qualified passers, per the stat site Muffed. It's not towards the bottom of the league, but it's good enough that the Jets should be able to take advantage of at least a few errant passes.

There are multiple factors working in the Jets' favor rather than just Ward's interception-worthy throw rate. With the pressure he's expected to face from New York's defensive front, the former No. 1 overall pick could be rushed to throw up some meatball subs.

Tennessee's offensive line is one of the biggest weaknesses of the team. They have two promising youngsters in guard Peter Skoronski and right tackle JC Latham, but the other three starters are suspect at best.

Pro Football Focus ranked the Titans' offensive line as the 29th-best unit in the league heading into 2026, and the Jets' pass rushers and interior defensive line should be able to force Ward into making some head-scratching decisions.

Aaron Glenn acknowledges the New York Jets interception drought

At his final press conference before the season opener, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn acknowledged the team's current interception drought and said that rather than forcing his defenders to focus on picks, he just wants them to get after the football.

"I think it would be a relief to hear you guys stop talking about it, first and foremost. But, listen, I really don't talk to our guys about it too much, you know. The thing that we talk about more is just making sure that we go after the ball, make sure that we punch the ball out, making sure that we emphasize that takeaways are a huge part of when it comes to winning and losing in this league."

Hopefully the Jets can snap their streak sooner rather than later. And they should have a good opportunity to do so when they're facing off against Ward on Sunday.
