Breece Hall update indicates Braelon Allen gets at least another week as starter

Another heavy workload for Allen?

For the last three weeks, the New York Jets have been without their usual starting running back, Breece Hall. A quad injury suffered in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions has kept him sidelined. In his place, 22-year-old Braelon Allen has filled in as the lead back and done an admirable job with his duties.

It seems like Allen may get another week as the Jets' starting running back, as head coach Aaron Glenn revealed this afternoon that Hall would not be practicing on Wednesday.

"Guys that won't practice today, but, man, we gonna see exactly how the week goes, is Breece Hall and Kene (Nwangwu). So again, won't practice today, we'll see exactly how that goes into tomorrow," Glenn told reporters.

While Glenn didn't necessarily rule Hall out for the Jets' Week 7 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, after a three-week absence, it's incredibly unlikely that New York will give their normal starting running back the full workload. Allen should see another week of at least the majority of touches.

Braelon Allen has been incredibly productive as New York Jets' lead RB

Since taking over as the bell cow, Allen has statistically been one of the best running backs in all of football. He's rushed for 194 yards on 41 carries, which ranks third and tied for second most in the NFL, respectively.

Not only that, but he's first in the league in yards after contact (174), runs of 10+ yards (ninth), and second in missed tackles forced (12).

Despite these numbers, Glenn has made it clear that when Hall returns, he'll still be the starting running back. He said as much on Monday and reiterated the same sentiment on Wednesday.

“Breece is our starter, he’s always been our starter," Glenn said, via The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt. "But Braelon is going to get touches too.”

It remains to be seen exactly how Glenn and offensive coordinator Frank Reich will divvy up those touches once Hall is back in the starting lineup. But one thing is clear: Allen deserves a bigger role.

As a 2024 draft pick, Allen has two years remaining on his rookie contract, including this season. In 2027, he'll be an impending free agent.

At some point down the road, the Jets will need to make a decision on who their running back of the future will be. Hall has had a productive career, but it's hard not to have wandering eyes for the younger option.
