The New York Jets look to turn the page after falling 26-19 to the New England Patriots. While there are things that need to be ironed out, one of the biggest bright spots on offense has been the play of running back Braelon Allen.
Breece Hall has been sidelined for the last three weeks with a quad injury, pushing Allen to the starting lineup.
Not only is he RB1, but his production on the field can't be ignored. And whenever Hall returns, the coaching staff needs to continue playing Allen, as he and Hall can form a legit 1-2 duo.
New York Jets' backfield could become a nightmare for opposing defenses
Justin Fried of The Jet Press highlighted that Allen is fifth in the NFL in rushing yards (253) over the last three weeks, behind Kenneth Walker, Bijan Robinson, James Cook, and Bucky Irving. Fried pointed out that Allen has 221 yards after contact since Week 4, only trailing Robinson among RBs.
To add to that, Allen is first in the NFL in missed tackles (15) and runs of 10-plus yards (10) since Week 4. This version of Allen is what the Jets envisioned, and with how good that he's been out there for Gang Green, this gives the offense a good problem to have.
Hall and Allen have the chance to form one of the best 1-2 punches in the league at running back, giving the Jets a thunder/lightning tandem. When Hall is back in the fold, offensive coordinator Frank Reich will need to find a way to keep both tailbacks involved in the game plan.
Through the first six games, Reich has had some issues getting everyone involved consistently. Whether that's Garrett Wilson or Kenyon Sadiq, there have been hurdles, but it shows there's some real talent on the offense.
It's up to the coaching staff to put these players in the best position to succeed. Allen is playing the best ball of his NFL career, and New York can't afford to phase him out if Hall is back. They both bring two different skill sets.
Allen is a nightmare to bring down once he gets to the second level. He's finally putting his foot in the ground and punishing defenders who attempt to tackle him. Meanwhile, Hall is a reliable pass catcher and stout in pass protection.
Hall can also make defenders miss in open space and is a more springy runner than Allen. They both have valuable skill sets that can also feed off each other. When the ball is rolling, they could be one of the best tandems in the NFL.
It seems like Hall is trending towards a return, and when he does, the Jets must find a way to keep Hall and Allen involved in the game script. It will keep both players fresh while forcing the opposing defense to slow down two different kinds of runners. The Jets need to put their best players on the field, and Allen has been just that lately.
