In a season that has given the New York Jets so little to write home about, the exploits of running back Breece Hall have shown that this team is capable of devising a strong running game that can give opposing teams fits.
Long removed from the days of Curtis Martin, the Jets had not had a 1,000-yard rusher in almost a full decade. Chris Ivory during the 2015 season (coincidentally, the last time the Jets had a winning record and even threatened for a playoff birth) was the last time that New York managed to get their running back to four digits.
On an incredibly bleak day against the New England Patriots, which saw the Jets fall to 3-13, Hall managed to break off a 59-yard touchdown run late in the game that helped him firmly pass the 1,000-yard mark. Even with the extra game, hitting 1K is a special moment for any running back.
The Jets need to make major changes to their roster in the offseason, but one thing that has become even clearer is that Hall must remain a big part of what New York is trying to do on that side of the ball.
Breece Hall becomes first Jets RB in 10 years to hit 1,000 rushing yards
Hall has run for 1,000 yards for what should have been the second time in his career, as a classic Jets mathematical error led to them removing him from Week 18 in the 2023 season when they believed he had crossed that plateau when he was just a few yards short.
Hall has not only reached this very exclusive plateau, but he did so while playing alongside the worst passing attack in the NFL. Despite Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook offering little as a vertical field stretcher, Hall and the Jets' offensive line got him to 1K.
While some might advise against giving Hall a big second contract, as paying a running back when this team has holes all over the roster would seem like a poor allocation of resources, Hall might be the most valuable non-quarterback in this offense. If the Jets draft a rookie, he needs players like Hall around him.
The Jets are in the business of talent acquisition, wherever that may come from. Hall is one of the best running backs in the AFC, and it would be silly for the team to let him walk in free agency and start over at the position.
