The NY Jets have officially decided on their next head coach, agreeing to terms on a five-year contract with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. The former Jets first-round pick was around for both the Rich Kotite years and the Bill Parcells turnaround during his long career as a player.
Glenn served as Parcells' No. 1 cornerback in New York during the late 90s and early 2000s, a time in which Glenn made three Pro Bowls and intercepted 24 passes. Parcells was so enamored with Glenn's talent that he brought him over to Dallas in 2005 during the former's Cowboys tenure.
If anyone knows how to turn a New York team into a winner, it's Parcells. The former Jets coach, who still talks to Glenn regularly after their very fruitful partnership together, seems to believe he will have all the necessary tools to follow in his footsteps and bring the Jets back to the postseason.
According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Parcells thinks that Glenn has "done an awful lot of diligent work to prepare himself to be a pro coach" while mentioning that his scouting background could give him an edge in helping build a winner in New York. Parcells also said Glenn will bring a feistiness and edge in his style of leadership this Jets team needs.
Bill Parcells believe Aaron Glenn will succeed as NY Jets head coach
Glenn got his start in football as a Jets scout before turning to coaching with the Browns in 2014. Following a five-season stint as the defensive backs coach with the New Orleans Saints, Glenn served as the Lions' DC for the last four seasons.
While Glenn's defense didn't put up tremendous numbers until his final two seasons with the Lions, and they fell off hard at the end of the season, the injuries Detroit suffered on that side should make fans hopeful that a superior Jets defensive roster could better implement his scheme.
Glenn's coordinator hires will be vital in determining how much of a success he will be with the Jets. If he poaches an assistant from a respected offensive scheme and entrusts someone to implement his defensive vision, there's no reason he can't win games with this defense.
If Glenn took any trait from Parcells, it's his ability to lead a group of men both verbally and non-verbally. If Glenn is half as successful as Parcells was during his time with the Jets, this will be a home run hire.
