The New York Jets' Week 1 victory over the Tennessee Titans was a breath of fresh air for the team on multiple fronts. Not only had it been almost a decade since the Jets had last won a season-opener on a Sunday, but it was a wire-to-wire victory that the team hasn't seen in what feels like forever.

Yes, New York is 1-0 right now, but there is still a lot of football to be played in the 2026 season, and things can go sideways for a team fast. Just ask Jets teams of yesteryear.

It's why getting off to a hot start can be so important in the NFL and sets the tone for a team the rest of the way. Every game for every football team can be considered a must-win, but for the Jets, particularly in this pivotal season that could decide the fate of their current regime, keeping the vibes high is a must.

Just ask former Jets offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, who now suits up for the hated AFC East rival New England Patriots. Continued losing can get inside a locker room like the plague, and things in New York have been bad for a long time.

Alijah Vera-Tucker says the New York Jets were 'numb' to losing

In an interview with the In Good Company podcast, hosted by former NFL offensive lineman Mitch Morse, Vera-Tucker compared what the Patriots locker room is like to what he experienced in his first few years in the league with the Jets.

"Unfortunately with the Jets, they haven’t been to the playoffs I think since 2010... It’s almost like a bad thing to say—but with all the losing, you almost get accustomed to it." Vera-Tucker told Morse. "Like, you almost get numb to it. And nobody wants that, especially as a competitor in this league."

Vera-Tucker spoke about how, coming to New England, "losing wasn't an option," considering their history of winning championships. Obviously, the Jets don't have that kind of pedigree thanks to the last decade-plus of futility.

But after this past weekend's victory, it's starting to feel like the tides could change.

Positive vibes will continue if the New York Jets keep winning

The Week 1 victory in Nashville was capped off with Jets fans almost completely taking over Nissan Stadium. New York's iconic J-E-T-S chant could be heard late into the fourth quarter, along with cheers for head coach Aaron Glenn.

Heading into Week 2's home opener against the Green Bay Packers, you can be assured that Jets fans are chomping at the bit to get out to MetLife Stadium to cheer on their 1-0 football team. The energy in East Rutherford, New Jersey, should be off the charts.

If the Jets manage to win that game against a 2025 playoff team? Fans may blow off the proverbial roof of their home stadium.

New York needs to keep these positive vibes rolling to erase the stink of years past, and maybe then will they finally start to flip the losing culture.
