Aaron Rodgers suddenly looks lost after NY Jets traded for Davante Adams
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets were hoping to recapture some of that Green Bay magic when they acquired Davante Adams in a trade last week, reuniting the six-time Pro Bowler with Aaron Rodgers in Florham Park.
The expectation was that Adams and Rodgers would pick up where they left off after years together serving as one of the best quarterback/wide receiver duos in NFL history. That hasn't exactly happened to this point.
Adams is making his Jets debut on Sunday Night Football against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7, and while the longtime Packers wideout has made a few plays, he's been held back by poor play from his quarterback.
Rodgers has struggled mightily to stretch the field against a talented Steelers defense, settling for check-downs far too often. He appears hesitant to throw downfield, as evidenced by a crushing interception he threw at the end of the first half.
Rodgers looks lost, and he can't blame it on his wide receivers.
The Aaron Rodgers-Davante Adams connection hasn't shown up yet
Rodgers completed just 3-of-8 passes for five yards and an interception on passes thrown more than five yards beyond the line of scrimmage. The vast majority of his production has come on plays after the catch, most of which has come courtesy of Breece Hall.
Adams has just three catches for 30 yards through two quarters. Rodgers' box score numbers might look good because of the yards after the catch, but his ball placement has been a mess and he looks almost scared to throw the ball beyond 10 yards.
His interception to Beanie Bishop Jr. late in the second quarter was a direct result of a double-clutch in which Rodgers hesitated to pull the trigger. It's not even a physical thing — it seems to be a mental issue.
What's going on with Aaron Rodgers? Why isn't the Rodgers-Adams connection clicking? Right now, it's on Rodgers. The four-time MVP needs to figure things out before the Jets lose their fourth consecutive game.
