The heftiest contract the New York Jets handed out in free agency this past spring was given to former Cincinnati Bengals edge Joseph Ossai, who unfortunately has been an absentee for most of the summer.
He started out on the Physically Unable to Perform list and missed most of training camp and the team's first two preseason games. Ossai was activated and suited up alongside several other projected Jets starters in the preseason finale, such as T'Vondre Sweat and David Bailey, but the 26-year-old was unable to come out unscathed.
Ossai exited the exhibition match early against the New York Giants with a foot injury and did not return. Head coach Aaron Glenn provided an update on the edge rusher at his Monday press conference, and the outlook didn't sound good. ESPN's Rich Cimini shared the diagnosis.
"This is a plantar fascia injury, according to Glenn, who describes it as a full tear, not a partial. Notes that a complete tear is better than a partial for rehab/recovery purposes, he says, relaying word from docs."
Glenn called Ossai "week-to-week," but Cimini added that he "wouldn't be surprised" if Ossai landed on short-term injured reserve with an eventual designation to return at some point this season.

Foot injuries are tricky when it comes to NFL athletes, and the recovery time can vary. Glenn points out that Ossai suffered a full tear, which should help his rehab time, but it's still a concerning update nonetheless.
Ossai was supposed to be a Week 1 starter for the Jets, opposite David Bailey coming off the edge for New York. His versatility as a run defender was going to help the No. 2 overall pick as he refined his own edge-setting skills.
Instead, his eventual return is murky at best. If Ossai does, in fact, land on short-term injured reserve, he'll be out for at least the first four games of the season, knocking him out of matchups against the Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears, and that's only if it's a four-game absence.
Expect a heavy dose of Kingsley Enagbare, the other veteran edge rusher the Jets signed in free agency, while Ossai recovers. The former Packers defender has had a solid summer himself and can do a lot of the dirty work that Ossai was expected to do.
