After Week 1, the New York Jets probably had all of the confidence in the world in their offensive line, and for good reason. They physically dominated the Tennessee Titans, ran for over 150 yards on the ground, and didn't allow Geno Smith to be sacked once.
The last two weeks, it has not been as pretty. The Jets are averaging a measly 62.5 rushing yards per game, and Smith has been sacked nine times. For a once promising unit, things have taken a turn for the worse.
While every member of New York's offensive line deserves a slice of blame, the spotlight has been brightest on 2024 first-round pick Olu Fashanu. On 127 pass-blocking reps, Fashanu has allowed four sacks, two fewer than he allowed all of last season.
While fans have reason to be concerned about their left tackle's regression, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn believes Fashanu has what it takes to pick his play up as the 2026 season rolls on.
Aaron Glenn displays the ultimate confidence in New York Jets LT Olu Fashanu
Speaking with reporters this past week, Glenn acknowledged that Fashanu hasn't been great so far this year, but reiterated how much he believes in his 23-year-old offensive tackle.
"Listen, we have all the trust in the world in Olu... These games are not easy. And there's no excuse at all.
He knows that he has to protect better, and that goes with everybody else on that o-line. But I have all the confidence in the world in that player.
And he'll do a good job for us."
Glenn's belief in Fashanu isn't unwarranted. He's an ascending young player, and as a 23-year-old in his third NFL season, the sky is the limit for the former Penn State standout.
Despite his numbers in terms of pressures and sacks given up, Fashanu hasn't even really been all that bad in terms of his Pro Football Focus numbers, particularly in the run game.
His 70.0 overall grade ranks 24th among offensive tackles through the first three games of the 2026 season, and his run-blocking grade of 72.7 ranks 21st. It's the pass-blocking that's been the problem. His 65.2 grade ranks 45th among 70 qualified tackles.
Regardless, there's plenty of time for the Jets and their offensive line to turn things around. There are 14 more games to go, and plenty of opponents for the maulers up front to prove their mettle against, Fashanu included.
