4 likeliest trade destinations for NY Jets WR Mike Williams
By Mike Luciano
The NY Jets signed former Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams with the expectation he would be the No. 2 wide receiver behind Garrett Wilson. Since then, Allen Lazard has overtaken him, Williams has regressed, and the Jets traded for a new No. 1 wide receiver in Davante Adams.
Williams has just 10 catches this season and has yet to find the end zone. With the Jets unwilling to use him as a deep threat or red zone target, which are his two biggest areas of strength, his appeal has gradually started to die down in the eyes of Aaron Rodgers and the New York coaching staff.
The Jets have now lost consecutive games in which Rodgers was intercepted on a game-winning drive after Williams was unable to haul in a deep pass. Against the Buffalo Bills, Williams may have run the wrong route or slipped when Rodgers threw the ball. He just never got on the same page.
A trade seems more likely now than ever before, as Williams has essentially been demoted to WR4 after the Adams trade. These 4 teams might be willing to give the former No. 7 pick one last chance to figure it out.
4 trade destinations for NY Jets WR Mike Williams
4. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are reeling from the loss of Rondale Moore in the offseason. By adding another towering receiver like Williams to the mix alongside Drake London and speedy slot expert Darnell Mooney, Atlanta could set itself apart as the king of the NFC South in 2024.
3. Detroit Lions
The Lions have two smaller, speedy receivers in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams taking most of their targets. Williams would give Jared Goff a physical presence on the outside the team is currently lacking. General manager Brad Holmes, as the Jets saw during the NFL Draft, will aggressively move picks for players he believes in.
2. Los Angeles Chargers
Williams may be better off returning home, albeit on a cheaper deal. Justin Herbert has been neutered in Greg Roman's passing game, though the lack of quality receivers (Ladd McConkey WR1) could be part of why the aerial attack has regressed. Williams may need to head back to familiar grounds to snap out of this funk.
1. Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs will be connected to every receiver on the market, and for good reason. While Williams doesn't have the speed Kansas City often prioritizes from their wide receivers, he could make for a nice stylistic contrast alongside Xavier Worthy while serving as a significant upgrade over players like Justin Watson.
