4 cut candidates currently not on Jets who may make Week 1 roster

The New York Jets are in the process of finalizing their 53-man roster ahead of their preseason finale against the New York Giants, but that doesn't mean everyone who will be on that initial grouping is currently in Florham Park.

Darren Mougey is no stranger to making a somewhat meaty addition to the roster right before the season starts, as evidenced by the Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs trades. A player on the roster bubble for another team might be able to find a long-term home in New York.

These four players may get cut by their current teams, but they could wiggle their way onto the Jets' Week 1 roster.

4. LB Chad Muma, New England Patriots

In many ways, Muma never got a fair shake. Drafted by the Jaguars right after they took Devin Lloyd, Muma has been relegated to spot duty. The former Wyoming star has bounced around between Jacksonville, Indianapolis, and New England, and he's held his own when pressed into service.

Muma's poor play in preseason games could lead to rookie Namdi Obiazor taking his spot as the top backup linebacker, relegating Muma to a special teams-only role if he is not released.

With Mykal Walker nursing an injury and Kiko Mauigoa in line for a starting role in case of an injury, adding a linebacker like Muma for depth might be a very prudent move.

3. IOL Ryan McCollum, Pittsburgh Steelers

The Jets' starting offensive line is very good, but the backups leave a lot to be desired. On the one hand, who can say they have quality seventh- and eighth-best offensive linemen? However, there's a middle ground between that and having Xavier Newman and right guard exclusive rookie Anez Cooper one play away from starting.

McCollum has been with the Steelers since the 2022 season and offers experience at multiple offensive line positions. Given how many top picks are on this Steelers o-line, it's hard to see a path to McCollum making it unless they carry 10 linemen.

McCollum could be an immediate upgrade over Newman and offer more versatility than Cooper during his rookie season.

2. S Geno Stone, Buffalo Bills

Stone's seven-interception season with the Ravens turned out to be a fluke, as he was mediocre after signing with the Bengals and appears to have been beaten out by Damar Hamlin in Buffalo.

Stone's issue is tackling, as he is one of the worst run-support safeties in the league. However, with 13 interceptions in the last three years, Stone clearly has an ability to generate turnovers in a way that suggests this isn't pure blind luck.

If Andre Cisco starts to falter, which should not be a crazy future to envision, Stone could be on this team's radar.

1. QB Will Levis, Tennessee Titans

Levis is firmly third on the Titans' depth chart at the moment behind Cam Ward and Mitch Trubisky. The Jets have Cade Klubnik as the backup, but anything unfortunate for Geno Smith leaves the Jets with Klubnik starting and Brady Cook active on game days.

Levis has boundless arm talent, and his history of operating a passable NFL offense could help him rise to QB2 if Klubnik is not ready. Getting him without a trade could be very good value.

If Levis can bring a copy of his Titans playbook over to Florham Park, that assuredly won't go amiss.
