The NY Jets could be in the market for a running back this free-agency period. And just prior to the start of the impending free-agency frenzy, the Jets have been connected to running back Jamaal Williams.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has reported that both the Jets and New England Patriots are expected to be active in the running back market this offseason, and the name mentioned for both teams was the former Green Bay Packers’ running back.
Following the hefty extension given to his now-former teammate, Aaron Jones, it became abundantly clear that Williams would not be back in Green Bay in 2021.
He’ll be looking for a new home this offseason, and that home could be with the Jets.
Jamaal Williams would be a perfect fit for the NY Jets
Originally a fourth-round pick of the Packers in the 2017 NFL Draft, Williams has been a steady presence in Green Bay’s backfield for the last four years.
He’s carried the ball anywhere between 107 and 153 times over the course of those four years and rushed for at least 460 yards in every season. On top of that, he’s been very productive in the receiving game hauling in at least 25 catches and 200 yards in each campaign.
Williams isn’t the most notable running back remaining on the market, but he might be the best value signing.
While the likes of Chris Carson, Kenyan Drake, and James Conner might be receiving the most attention, Williams has the potential to make an impact as an all-around running back for some team.
He’s a standout receiver and pass-blocker that makes him very valuable on third downs. And he’s a more-than-capable runner with good vision and burst that’s allowed him to average over 4.2 yards per carry in each of the last two seasons.
The Jets ideally need a veteran to add to their backfield this offseason. With the likes of La’Mical Perine and Ty Johnson returning, Williams could represent a perfect complement and someone who could receive a sizable chunk of the carries.
He’ll also come at a significantly cheaper price than someone like Carson or Drake, making the move even wiser.
Jamaal Williams would be an ideal target for the Jets, and it seems as though they have interest.
