Get up-to-the-minute updates from tonight’s preseason Week 1 matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.

After months of no football, preseason action is in full swing. Tonight, the New York Jets begin their preseason schedule with a home game against the Atlanta Falcons. Jets fans in attendance will see a lot of action featuring players fighting for final roster spots.

Of course, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks playing tonight. Head coach Todd Bowles hasn’t revealed how he’ll divide up reps tonight but it’s expected that Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Sam Darnold will see a lot of reps tonight.

For Darnold, it’s all about making the most of preseason action to make his case that he could potentially start for the Jets this upcoming season. If he performs well enough, it might entice the Jets to consider trading Bridgewater sooner than expected. Speaking of which, Bridgewater could also make his case to be the starter under center for the Jets if he also does well from here on out. For now, however, veteran quarterback Josh McCown is on top of the depth chart and the man to beat for both young competitors.

More from The Jet Press

Besides the quarterback situation of the Jets, it will be very interesting to see how the Jets defense performs tonight. Ideally, their defensive secondary figures to be the strength of the defense but what still remains as a big question mark is how their overall pass rush will be. Will someone step up on the Jets defensive line that can take down or at least pressure opposing quarterbacks besides the Big Cat?

Defensive end Leonard Williams will need all the help he can get as he can’t do it alone. Keep an eye on rookie defensive end Nathan Shepherd who has been the talk of Jets training camp so far as he makes his case to be the starter alongside Williams.

Below you’ll find our live tracker for tonight’s Falcons vs. Jets game. You just witnessed history: It was the Jets' first home shutout win in their preseason history. Should I save the stat sheet as a keepsake? PS. Why did Dan Quinn even try that last-second FG? #Jets

Backup inside linebacker Neville Hewitt with an interception. He and Kevin Minter were the second-stringers at inside linebacker tonight, as expected.

— Darryl Slater (@DarrylSlater) August 11, 2018

Jets DL Mike Pennel and LB Dylan Donahue have 2nd-half sacks. Four mins to go to that elusive PS shutout…

— Randy Lange (@rlangejets) August 11, 2018

Trenton Cannon just dropped another punt. He recovered this one too, but still …

— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) August 11, 2018

Jets have had only 3 preseason shutouts all-time & have never had a home PS shutout. Falcons drive to Jets 5 but on 4th-&-2 fade incompletion by rookie QB Kurt Benkert, CB Derrick Jones in coverage, the blanking bid is still alive.

— Randy Lange (@rlangejets) August 11, 2018

To the home stretch. #ATLvsNYJ pic.twitter.com/OGD06aujsp

— New York Jets (@nyjets) August 11, 2018

TE Neal Sterling (ankle) is doubtful to return. #ATLvsNYJ

— New York Jets (@nyjets) August 11, 2018

Sam Darnold, ladies and gentlemen.

That’s it. I mean. Wow.

Takes snap. Looks left. Not there. Steps up in pocket, runs across line to buy time, directs his receiver to the sideline, delivers a strike for a touchdown.

Rookies. Don’t. Do. That. #Jets

— Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) August 11, 2018

Sam Darnold has a glove on his left hand now. Got stepped on in the first half #nyj

— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) August 11, 2018

Sam Darnold remains in the game at QB to start the 2nd half. #ATLvsNYJ

— New York Jets (@nyjets) August 11, 2018

Terrible fumble on that punt return by RB Trenton Cannon. Jets recover at their own 5. … But don't worry. Sam Darnold has them right where he wants them.

Charles Johnson catches a 3-yard TD pass – but is called for offensive pass interference. #Jets

— Dennis Waszak Jr. (@DWAZ73) August 11, 2018

Doc checked out Darnold for possible finger injury on left hand. Looks like he got "spiked" on 5-yard run/slide. Appears OK. #Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) August 11, 2018

Trainers just left Darnold. Don't see any bandages or anything. #Jets QB looked down at his hand a few times, but doesn't appear to be anything serious.

— Dennis Waszak Jr. (@DWAZ73) August 11, 2018

It looks like maybe Darnold has a cut or something on his hand. Does not look serious. He is talking to Bates while trainers work on the hand #nyj

— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) August 11, 2018

Sam Darnold misses Charles Johnson along the sideline with a deep ball. Coverage was tight, but ball sailed high. Jets punt. OK enough first drive for Darnold.

— Darryl Slater (@DarrylSlater) August 11, 2018

Sam Darnold ➡️ Neal Sterling ➡️ 1st Down #ATLvsNYJ pic.twitter.com/Zf330pvgZJ

— New York Jets (@nyjets) August 11, 2018

Sterling open again. Darnold not phased by pressure coming off the edge. McCown very animated and excited for that conversion.

— Sam Neumann (@SamNeu_) August 11, 2018

Sam Darnold's 1st 2 Jets passes: swing pass to fellow rookie Trenton Cannon for no gain, then completion under duress to TE Neal Sterling for 8 yds and Sam's first first down w/ Green & White.

— Randy Lange (@rlangejets) August 11, 2018

The Sam Darnold Era has begun … and with a standing ovation from the crowd.

Teddy Bridgewater: two series, 10 points, 7-for-8, 85 yards, 1 TD pass. He looks smooth in the pocket. This makes things interesting at QB, doesn't it? #Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) August 11, 2018

Bertolet is good from 45, it's 10-0 at MetLife. @ATLvsNYJ https://t.co/vr8Uk5w0yP

— Eric Allen (@eallenjets) August 11, 2018

Rookie RB Trenton Cannon is continuing to impress. He's showing an ability to find the holes and make defenders miss, in addition to his speed. He has 3 carries for 18 yards so far. With Crowell out, Elijah McGuire not playing and Bilal Powell probably done, he'll play a lot.

— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) August 11, 2018

Jamal Adams is doing push-ups on the sideline after that Ijalana penalty. #nyj

— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) August 11, 2018

There's the first "helmet" penalty, and it could be costly. Skrine flagged for lowering head to initiate contact on a kickoff tackle. Personal foul. Now Skrine being evaluated by doc on sideline. #Jets

— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) August 11, 2018

Jets CB Buster Skrine just drew a 15-yard penalty under the NFL's new helmet rule. It hurt, too. He's now being looked at by doctors on the sideline.

4th & 3, #Jets go for it – and Bridgewater connects with a reaching Jermaine Kearse for a 1st down.

— Dennis Waszak Jr. (@DWAZ73) August 10, 2018

Jets already showing their new running game — the outside zone. It'll be a staple under new OC Jeremy Bates. #Jets
