Get up-to-the-minute updates from tonight’s preseason Week 1 matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.
After months of no football, preseason action is in full swing. Tonight, the New York Jets begin their preseason schedule with a home game against the Atlanta Falcons. Jets fans in attendance will see a lot of action featuring players fighting for final roster spots.
Of course, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks playing tonight. Head coach Todd Bowles hasn’t revealed how he’ll divide up reps tonight but it’s expected that Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Sam Darnold will see a lot of reps tonight.
For Darnold, it’s all about making the most of preseason action to make his case that he could potentially start for the Jets this upcoming season. If he performs well enough, it might entice the Jets to consider trading Bridgewater sooner than expected. Speaking of which, Bridgewater could also make his case to be the starter under center for the Jets if he also does well from here on out. For now, however, veteran quarterback Josh McCown is on top of the depth chart and the man to beat for both young competitors.
More from The Jet Press
- NY Jets: Why the team should target cornerback Shaquill Griffin
- NY Jets reportedly non-tendering linebacker Harvey Langi
- NY Jets: Why the team should not cut Jamison Crowder
- NY Jets should try to sign Kenny Golladay in free agency
- NY Jets: Jonnu Smith would be a smart free-agent target
Besides the quarterback situation of the Jets, it will be very interesting to see how the Jets defense performs tonight. Ideally, their defensive secondary figures to be the strength of the defense but what still remains as a big question mark is how their overall pass rush will be. Will someone step up on the Jets defensive line that can take down or at least pressure opposing quarterbacks besides the Big Cat?
Defensive end Leonard Williams will need all the help he can get as he can’t do it alone. Keep an eye on rookie defensive end Nathan Shepherd who has been the talk of Jets training camp so far as he makes his case to be the starter alongside Williams.

You just witnessed history: It was the Jets' first home shutout win in their preseason history. Should I save the stat sheet as a keepsake? PS. Why did Dan Quinn even try that last-second FG? #Jets

Jets have had only 3 preseason shutouts all-time & have never had a home PS shutout. Falcons drive to Jets 5 but on 4th-&-2 fade incompletion by rookie QB Kurt Benkert, CB Derrick Jones in coverage, the blanking bid is still alive.

Sam Darnold, ladies and gentlemen.
That’s it. I mean. Wow.
