Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield is everything the New York Jets need in a team captain and then some. He should easily be their selection with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield has been making Oklahoma football very successful and exciting to watch ever since transferring there in 2015. In his three years with OU, Mayfield has totaled up 119 passing touchdowns and 12,292 passing yards. Also, he’s only thrown 21 interceptions.

Not only is a great passer, but he can also work with his legs when needed. During his time in Oklahoma, Mayfield has run for a total of 893 yards and 18 touchdowns. All of these great stats were enough for the Sooner star to earn himself a Heisman trophy in 2017, as well two Big 12 Player of the Year awards.

The Jets have not had a franchise quarterback since Chad Pennington. They’ve tried to get one, but it just hasn’t worked out. While they did bring in Teddy Bridgewater from Minnesota, they still need someone younger to groom for the future. Bridgewater hasn’t played a full season since 2015 due to a torn ACL and that doesn’t come off well heading into the upcoming season.

Mayfield not only has the skills, but he also has the confidence. He knows what he can do, and he shows that. Some believe he’s another Johnny Manziel, but that isn’t the case. While Mayfield has been in trouble before (public intoxication, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and fleeing in 2017, according to Rob Goldberg of Bleacher Report), it’s been a full year since it’s happened.

Since then, Mayfield has looked more focused than he’s ever been, and he deserves the chance to prove his worth as an NFL star.

Gang Green needs their next Broadway Joe. They have some solid receivers, they’re rebuilding well and one main piece that would solve the puzzle is a star franchise quarterback. Based on everything Baker Mayfield has shown, he can definitely be that rising star for this team.
