As the New York Jets plan to have an open quarterback competition come training camp, veteran quarterback Josh McCown spoke highly of Christian Hackenberg and his progress so far.

For all intents and purposes this offseason, the New York Jets knew they needed a veteran quarterback to continue being a mentor to their younger quarterbacks. The Jets brought in Josh McCown for this very purpose and also to compete all summer long for the open starting quarterback spot. Quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg still have a lot of hard work ahead of them but McCown has been doing his part to ensure they’ll be ready in case their number is called.

All eyes have been on both Petty and Hackenberg so far during organized team activities and minicamp with the hope being one of them emerge as a clear-cut starter during training camp. For Hackenberg, fans and analysts are hoping that the football world can finally see what he’s able to do in the pro scene.

It’s hard to predict what will transpire between now and the regular season but Hackenberg will have his shot. The Jets have committed to having an open quarterback competition all training camp long which means he has a chance at not only earning a starting position but proving his worth.

As per the Media Relations Department of the Jets, McCown recently chimed his thoughts on what he likes so far out of Hackenberg since the moment he arrived on the scene:

On what he likes about Christian Hackenberg…

Well, I think the main thing is, I feel like his confidence has grown every day and he improves every day and we can see that – his grasp, of this system has been really good.

The coaches are doing a heck of a job of teaching him and he’s taking the coaching and you see it rep by rep, his improvement – I think that’s cool and it’s going to take time, but sometimes you have to step back to see guys, whereas with Christian it seems like every day, (he can say,) “I got better today.”

He’s better than he was yesterday – I feel like he’s improving tremendously. Obviously, he’s a big, strong guy that can make a lot of throws, make all the throws and that part is attractive, so now it’s just getting him to a level on this offense where he feels really comfortable.

For now, at least, all Hackenberg can do is continue to hone his craft and prepare to give it his all. Confidence breeds success as Hackenberg is working his way up towards hopefully putting everything together. It remains to be seen if he’ll be successful or not but for now, he’s saying and doing all the right things.
